Mission Statement
The mission of Margaret's Village is to provide transitional housing for homeless women, children and families, and to provide experiences that empower, mentor, and support our residents and the broader community so they can achieve their highest potential - turning homelessness and isolation into community and self-sufficiency. In addition, our goal is to provide these services in a safe, loving, comfortable, dignified environment that inspires hope, personal growth and empowerment.
About This Cause
The year 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Margaret’s Village, a transitional housing and empowerment program to end homelessness for women, children, and families on Chicago’s South Side. Margaret’s Village transforms lives – the lives of people who are homeless and isolated. Being an agent of change comes with great responsibility. Shining a bright light on opportunity and possibility, we let our residents know that their current condition will not be their conclusion in life. We have several partnerships that are important to us in carrying out our mission. One such, that we are proud of is our 30-year partnership with the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. They and Heartland Alliance Health run onsite clinics at our shelters, providing physical and mental health services and referrals. Our Impact Over the decades, we have transformed the lives of over 10,000 residents and area seniors. Each year, 400+ residents receive over 29,000 nights of shelter, 105,000 meals, and over 2,300 case management contacts. 70% of our residents successfully transition into permanent housing. Our vision for the next 50 years is to increase the positive impact of Margaret's Village on our residents and our community. We are developing a plan for adaptive reuse of our stately, century-old facilities and adjacent land parcels. When complete we imagine a modernized hub of innovation that would serve our neighborhood across the life continuum. We envision that this will help change the landscape of Englewood and the South Side.
