About This Cause

Listening House is a day shelter located in St. Paul, Minnesota, dedicated to serving the needs of unhoused adults. As a vital resource hub, Listening House provides a safe, welcoming, and dignified space for individuals seeking respite from the streets. Our mission is to offer essential services and support to the unhoused community, empowering them on their journey toward stability and well-being. Our role in this ecosystem extends beyond our direct services; we welcome our partner organizations to bring their services to our space, allowing guests to connect with outreach workers, case managers, and healthcare professionals on-site. We also respond flexibly to the community’s evolving needs, such as opening beyond regular hours to serve as an overflow shelter during extreme weather or emergencies when we have the capability to do so. Listening House is committed to being a welcoming and inclusive environment. We uphold basic guidelines for respecting the space, staff, volunteers, and other guests, but we never turn anyone away. This open-door policy ensures that guests who may face restrictions elsewhere know they have a place with us, provided they adhere to our respectful and safe standards. Our commitment to being guest-centered includes listening to our community. At monthly in-house meetings, guests are encouraged to share their opinions and concerns and celebrate milestones together. These gatherings foster a sense of belonging and help ensure that everyone feels invested in the space we share. One guest noted in a letter he sent after moving out of state: "Coming to Listening House made me feel I'd entered a new dimension because of the eyes of staff and volunteers - Eyes that were open and told you that you were worth something; a valuable member of the human race." Listening House fills a vital role in our community by providing essential support and resources during the hours when overnight shelters are closed. We act as a community information and networking hub, serving as a safe and welcoming space where guests can access a range of critical services. For those without a permanent residence, we offer a mailing address, secure lockers, and access to showers, bathrooms, laundry, and over-the-counter medication. Additionally, we provide free Wi-Fi, electronic charging stations, and dedicated sleep alcoves for those needing rest. Guests can also meet with service providers on-site, receive meals, and access bus tokens for transportation to jobs, appointments, or other necessary destinations. The social support and engagement provided by our compassionate staff and volunteers create a sense of community, helping to uplift and empower individuals as they work toward stability. Listening House is a lifeline for those we serve, filling critical gaps in support and ensuring that our guests always have a place to turn. Listening House is also the proud founder of the St. Paul Work Now program, the only low-barrier work program of its kind in our area. This unique program offers a crucial pathway for our guests to gain stable, sustainable employment. Designed to remove traditional barriers to employment, St. Paul Work Now provides participants with valuable work experience, income, and a renewed sense of purpose and confidence. Through this program, we’ve seen participants transition into permanent, full-time jobs, and some have even been able to secure housing as well. It’s a bridge to a more stable future for our guests, helping them take significant steps toward self-sufficiency.
