Mission Statement
Lawndale Christian Health Center LCHC is a community-based nonprofit organization, founded in 1984 and dedicated to improving the health of Chicago's West Side. LCHC provides quality primary care services without regard for a patient's ability to pay and serves as a community resource for eliminating health disparities.
About This Cause
Lawndale Christian Health Center (LCHC) was founded by local community residents in 1984 to address unmet health needs of their community. LCHC was founded out of Lawndale Community Church. The original clinic site was an abandoned facility renovated, in large part, by student volunteers from Farragut Career Academy on their spring break and weekends. Today, working out of six health center including a school-based health center at Farragut Academy, LCHC provides low-income patients with access to a full spectrum of affordable, high-quality primary health care services including dental, optometry and pharmacy. LCHC’s mission is to show and share the love of Jesus by promoting wellness and providing quality, affordable healthcare for Lawndale and the neighboring communities. Over 30 years of work on the West Side of Chicago has confirmed that to transform the health of low-income communities, healthcare environments must fully engage patients in their well-being in order to encourage healthy living and improve access to preventive care. LCHC aspires to create a healthy community in which the socioeconomic and racial barriers that contribute to health disparities are eliminated. The primary service area of LCHC is a home to approximately 170,000 people, of whom 42% are African American and 48% Hispanic. In the two zip code areas immediately surrounding LCHC (60623 and 60624), 38% of the population is below the poverty line, and 69% earn less than 200% of the poverty line. In North Lawndale, 45% of the community’s nearly 11,000 households earn less than $20,000 annually. LCHC seeks to be a valuable partner and reliable resource to underserved populations in underserved neighborhoods. LCHC is the medical home to more than 63,000 low-income patients. In FY 2017, these patients will account for 175,000 medical visits in family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics and nursing. In addition, LCHC’s complementary healthcare services to the community include: 12,000 behavioral health visits, and 7,500 visits for optometry services. The Dental Clinic at LCHC will provide approximately 15,500 visits to patients in need of dental services. LCHC serves underserved populations, include those without any insurance, single mothers, the aging and disabled, and undocumented immigrants. LCHC provides quality healthcare services without regard for ability to pay. Nearly 30 percent of all visits are paid for on a sliding scale by patients who have no health insurance coverage. Another 52 percent of patient visits are paid by Medicaid, and the remaining care is evenly divided between Medicare and private insurance. In seeking to promote personal and community health, LCHC’s focus in recent years has been to develop our capacity as a certified patient-centered medical home. LCHC’s PCMH Recognition and nearly 20 years of Joint Commission Accreditation are indicators of long-term commitment to quality care. In addition, LCHC is a provider of community-based human services, including social workers and case managers and educational services. LCHC operates a full-scale fitness center to increase wellness and prevention within the community and runs a cafe that offers healthy alternatives to fast-food and corner store food options available in the community.
