Mission Statement
Tuesday’s Child mission is to enable families to thrive though positive parent training, inclusive behavioral classrooms and support services. Our proven model impacts home, school and the community.
About This Cause
In 1980, Tuesday’s Child was established as a research program to address not only the needs of children who displayed aggressive and hard to control behaviors due to biological or environmental risk factors, but also the needs of their family members. Tuesday’s Child’s approach was twofold: the child would receive intervention in a therapeutic environment, and the parents would receive support, training and ongoing individualized feedback on issues pertaining to their children’s development and behavior. The program enjoyed remarkable success with both the children and their families. Outstanding changes were observed in not only the behavior and development of the children, but in the dynamics of family life and daily interactions between parents and children. In 1984 Tuesday’s Child was established as an independent 501 c3 non-profit corporation to continue its mission: “to help families establish and maintain strong, positive relationships with their children from the earliest stages and to help children, especially those at risk for failure, to enter school ready to learn”. Since Tuesday’s Child was established as a research program, in 1980 and was established as an independent 501c3 non-profit corporation in 1984, the organization has grown to serve over 800 individuals a year. Many of the children enrolled in our classrooms suffer from mental health or learning issues such as specific learning disabilities, early onset bi-polar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder and other emotional/behavioral disturbances. Since 1980, Tuesday’s Child has been providing our core program, Behavioral Intervention Program. Besides this core program, that has been extremely successful since its inception in 1980, Tuesday’s Child has since provided additional services and programs such as including a culturally competent, bilingual component to our evidence-based Behavioral Intervention services, which started in 1997. This Spanish-language component targets parents with young children at risk of or living with, special needs. Other services such as Outreach and School Advocacy started in 1985 and Summer Camp started in 2003. The TC Scholars Preschool, opening in September of 2016, will be the first of its kind in Chicago dedicated to working with children with social and emotional delays and challenging classroom behaviors.
