About This Cause
The Heartland Institute is a national, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization based in Chicago. Heartland was founded in 1984. Its mission is to discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems. Three things make Heartland unique among free-market think tanks: We focus on communicating with state and national elected officials nationwide. Heartland is the only free-market think tank that communicates regularly with more than 8,300 national and state officials. We contact more elected officials, more often, than any other think tank in the U.S. We produce publications that actually get read by elected officials. Four monthly public policy newspapers – Budget & Tax News, Environment & Climate News, Health Care News, and School Reform News – present free-market ideas as news rather than research or opinion. These publications are absolutely unique in the think tank movement, and surveys show they work. We promote the best work of other free-market think tanks on our websites, in our newspapers, at our events, and through our extensive Government Relations and Communications efforts. Nobody else does more to promote the work of other free-market groups than we do. It is part of our mission to do this. Heartland’s annual budget of approximately $7 million supports a full-time staff of 35. It is supported by the voluntary contributions of approximately 5,500 supporters. Contributions are tax-deductible under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
