Mission Statement

Stages Theatre Company is committed to the enrichment and education of children and youth in a professional theatre environment that stimulates artistic excellence and personal growth. For more than 30 years, we have positively impacted thousands of young people, preparing them for success in school and in life. As we look toward the future, we will continue to provide innovative and exceptional arts education programming for youth of all ages, as well as community outreach initiatives to ensure accessibility for all youth and families.

About This Cause

Stages Theatre Company was founded in 1984 in the western suburbs of Minneapolis out of a need for quality theatre programming for children. Since then, STC has grown to become the third largest nonprofit theatre producer in Minnesota and is among the largest professional theatres for young audiences in the country. We are housed in the Hopkins Center for the Arts, a 37,000 square-foot arts facility located on Mainstreet in downtown Hopkins. Since our founding, STC has significantly broadened in reach and scope, involving youth in the theatre arts through opportunities on stage, backstage, in the audience, and in the classroom. We engage diverse youth from the community with themes relevant to their lives and involve them in creating inspiring works featuring young people in meaningful roles. Through our theatre productions, educational workshops, conservatory classes and school-based residency programs, Stages Theatre Company serves more than 130,000 youth and family members each year. Stages Theatre Company is proud to offer the following: • Main stage plays for young audiences: STC’s annual season inspires audiences with high-quality productions of new work, including commissions, popular musicals, and adaptations of children’s stories. Youth actors share the stage with adult actors, who serve as mentors. We engage many respected theatre artists to ensure high quality and artistic excellence. • Creation of new works: Since our inception, STC has commissioned over 100 new works by seasoned and emerging playwrights. We seek to develop material with significant and meaningful roles for young actors. We believe in providing young artists with opportunities to learn from professional adult actors while performing in demanding roles that foster growth and are integral in conveying a story. • Theatre training: Our acting conservatory engages youth ages 7-17 in classes focused on skills for performance, including voice/diction, character development, movement and text/script exploration. Conservatory training provides mentorship opportunities for students to learn from professionals. Theatre workshops are theme-based classes for students ages 4-17 that teach beginner-level acting skills. • In-school outreach: STC is a leader in arts-integrated K-12 learning. Our Arts and Literacy Partnership with Hopkins Public Schools provides instruction to improve student reading and comprehension skills and close the achievement gap. Since this partnership began, we have met all district and statewide benchmarks for student achievement. • Access programs: STC is a pioneer in theatre education for youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Since its inception, our CAST (Creative Accepting Sensory-friendly Theatre) program has grown to two full classrooms with three sessions each and a 100% retention rate. STC continues to offer ASL-interpreted, audio-described, captioned, and sensory-friendly performances* (*STC was first in the Twin Cities to do so). Through our Open Door program, STC provides free and reduced-price tickets and tuition subsidies for 14,000 persons annually. • First Job in the Arts: Stages Theatre Company continues to expand our offerings to high school students looking for a pathway into a non-performing career in the arts. Students work with professional staff at STC in administrative, production design and education to explore other areas of non-profit theatre management.
