About This Cause
Urban Ventures has also been a catalyst for community development and economic growth in South Minneapolis since its founding in 1993. We do everything possible to ensure that EVERY child in our neighborhood graduates from high school and continues their education. Our approach is holistic and our impact is deep. Programs include: Act Six: Act Six is an urban leadership development and mentoring program administered in the Twin Cities by Urban Ventures. Act Six provides 25-35 full-tuition, full-need scholarships at one of our partner colleges: Augsburg University, Bethany College, Bethel University, University of Northwestern-St.Paul, or North Central University. Each scholar graduates with a fully funded college career and is prepared to return to his or her community to make a lasting impact. Athletics - Basketball & Soccer: A year-round program for boys and girls ages 5-18 at different levels of ability. The Basketball program is located in the Colin Powell Youth Leadership Center where there are four courts available for training, leagues and tournaments. The Soccer program plays on two soccer fields- KIX and Honeywell, during the outdoor season and the Colin Powell Youth Leadership Center during the indoor season. Center for Families - Forever Parents/Siempre Padres: Forever Parents/Siempre Padres works to empower men and women to be effective and loving parents through engaging large and small group classes. During 20 weeks of classes, the English- and Spanish-language curriculum empowers the entire family—parents and children—to work together to build strong and healthy relationships. Participant growth focuses on three pillars: personal character development, couple/family relationships, and parenting dynamics. Each session is taught by experts and focuses on teaching practical skills, helping participants be the parent their children need. Urban Ventures Farm: Food-focused social enterprises directed by Urban Ventures gives teen and adult employees the opportunity to receive paid job skills training as cooks (ServSafe certification) beekeepers and farm-workers. Youth Center: Our After School & Literacy program invests in leadership development, academic support, and a variety of enrichment opportunities such as music, STEM and entrepreneurship for students in grades 1-8. Participants of this program will find themselves part of a community and positioned to lead and impact their communities. Music Academy & Recording Studio: The Music Academy and Recording Studio offers free small group music classes and individual private lessons for youth in grades 6-12. Participants have access to a full array of instruments and artistic outlets, including piano, guitar, drums, recording production, and hip hop. Studio time is free for students.
