Mission Statement
The Literacy Connection is dedicated to helping adults in the northwest suburbs of Chicago reach their literacy goals through one-on-one volunteer tutoring and small group instruction.
About This Cause
The Literacy Connection, is a non-profit established in 1984, as a community-based 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to helping adults acquire fundamental literacy skills and learn to read, write, speak and understand English. Learners are provided tutoring services free of charge in the sixteen communities we serve. The organization offers learner-centered instruction in settings that meet individual needs. In the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, the organization provides free literacy and English language tutoring to adults. The twelve-hour tutor training teaches volunteers to help individuals learn to read, write, speak and understand English better. Instruction is offered in any public/virtual space at convenient times. The majority of learners are tutored at a minimum of four hours each month. When funded, the Family Literacy Program provides English Language instruction to adults in their children’s school setting. Programming includes parent/child activities, school partnerships and components that teach adults to help their children succeed in school. The Workplace Literacy Program provides paid instruction for employees at their workplace to help them improve their English and their work skills. All programs encourage adults to pursue former educational or work training opportunities with other providers when applicable.
