In 1992, the Lookingglass ensemble extended its vision to serve traditionally underserved populations by reaching out to Chicagoland’s diverse constituency through the creation of our Education and Community programs department. Now in its 32nd Season, Lookingglass has developed and produced 70 world premieres, garnered 161 Joseph Jefferson nominations, and served as an ambassador of Chicago’s cultural richness through tours in 15 cities nationwide.

About This Cause

Lookingglass Theatre Company is a national leader in the creation and presentation of new, cutting-edge theatrical works, and shares its ensemble-based theatrical techniques with underserved Chicago-area students through its Education and Community Programs. Guided by an artistic vision centered on the core values of collaboration, transformation, and invention, Lookingglass seeks engage and inspire audiences’ and students across Chicago, leaving them changed, charged and empowered. Lookingglass propels its unique mission through three core programs: the creation of new work through gglassworks, Lookingglass’ new play development program, the staging of world premieres on two stages, and the outreach of Education and Community Programs (E&C). E&C initiatives are informed by gglassworks methodology, and programs include in-school artist residencies, professional development programs for Chicago-area teachers, Student Matinees, a Young Ensemble, and a scholarship program for low-income youth. Lookingglass’ foremost commitment is to develop new theatrical work. At most theaters, new theatrical work programs focus on the development of a script, and resources are often focused exclusively on the playwright. Lookingglass distinguishes itself from this traditional model through gglassworks, Lookingglass’ signature new play development initiative. gglassworks creates and develops stirring new work by supporting the writing process and providing the resources necessary for playwrights to collaborate with actors, designers, choreographers, and musicians so together they can explore how best to bring the story to life. gglassworks programs include two artistic development retreats in the fall, a Season Decision Retreat in the winter, and The Writer’s Workshop, a four-week residency in which Lookingglass artists create onsite for a minimum of 20-hours each week. Lookingglass, recipient of the 2011 Tony Award for Regional Theatre, is proud to be recognized as a national leader in the creation and presentation of new theatrical work. Now in its 32nd Season, Lookingglass has staged 70 world premieres, received 161 Joseph Jefferson awards and nominations, and shared its work in 15 cities nationwide. Lookingglass' 2019-2020 Season will advance the Company’s mission to present innovative theatrical productions through the hit STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER, adapted and directed by Tony Award winning Ensemble Member Mary Zimmerman, the world premiere HER HONOR, JANE BYRNE, written and directed by Ensemble Member J. Nicole Brooks, and the return of our seminole production of LOOKINGGLASS ALICE.
