Mission Statement
Our mission is to prevent blindness and preserve sight. Founded in 1908, Prevent Blindness is the nation's leading volunteer eye health and safety organization dedicated to fighting blindness and saving sight. Focused on promoting a continuum of vision care, Prevent Blindness touches the lives of millions of people each year.
About This Cause
Together, with our network of affiliates and partnering organizations, Prevent Blindness is committed to eliminating unnecessary vision loss and inequities in eye health. We work to make sure that everyone has a chance to enjoy a lifetime of healthy vision, from infancy through adulthood. Vision loss can rob people of their independence, mobility, and quality of life. More than seven million people are living with uncorrectable vision loss, including blindness, yet half of all blindness can be prevented. Access to a pair of glasses is shockingly still a challenge for far too many. Our work tackles this inequity, while at the same time focusing on many other vision conditions. We connect patients to appropriate eye care, including distributing vouchers from industry partners for free or reduced cost eye exams and glasses to low income families in need. We promote early detection of vision and eye health problems and access to eye care. Our National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health reaches more than a million children each year, helping to screen them for preventable eye diseases and advocating for state standards for children's vision in public health. We provide a free library of vision and eye health education resources – in English and Spanish – to the public. We create a community for those living with vision problems and offer guidance on early detection of eye disease and prevention of accidents that can cause permanent loss of sight. Our sight-saving work is possible thanks to donors like you!
