HABITAT FOR HUMANITY of Northern Fox Valley

ELGIN, Illinois, 60120-6404 United States

Mission Statement

HFH uses volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials to build affordable houses in partnership with homeowner families. Families apply and are selected based on need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the no-interest mortgage. Homes are at cost. The family’s equity position in their home is vested over the first thirteen years of ownership. Habitat pools the mortgage payments to finance additional houses. Partner families are required to pay a down payment, monthly mortgage payments and invest hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” into building their homes.

HFH International carries out its mission at the community level through affiliates. HFH of Northern Fox Valley, founded in 1990, localizes Habitat’s mission within in Chicago’s northwest suburbs by building or rehabbing affordable single-family homes for families earning 30% - 50% of the area median income of $69,600. Beginning in 2010 HFH of Northern Fox Valley turned exclusively to the rehabbing of foreclosed and abandoned homes in its service area. This strategy fulfills the mission of the organization and positively impacts the neighborhood. This is the most cost effective way to fulfill the organization’s mission controlling the sale cost of the home for the family. Northern Fox Valley added the A Brush with Kindness program to help preserve affordable housing by doing minor repairs and painting of homes owned by low income families unable to do or pay for the work.
