Mission Statement

KAN-WIN works to eradicate gender-based violence through comprehensive, survivor-centered services, education, and outreach to Asian American communities and beyond.

About This Cause

KAN-WIN’s services are provided for free to all victims of gender-based violence, but KAN-WIN specializes in linguistically and culturally sensitive services that target Asian immigrant victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. While gender-based violence (GBV) is prevalent among all cultures, religions, classes, and ethnicities, its impact on the Asian American community is disproportionately high due to the intersection of compounded and marginalized identities. Differences in cultural and traditional backgrounds, isolation, limited English proficiency (LEP), unstable immigration status, lack of understanding about social, economic, and political systems, among others, are some examples of factors that create formidable barriers to vital resources for Asian immigrant victims. For victims with such compounded barriers, mainstream domestic/sexual violence agencies are simply not enough. As one of only a handful of agencies equipped with the expertise to Asian immigrant victims of gender-based violence, KAN-WIN is constantly striving to cast a wider safety net for victims who remain in the shadows. KAN-WIN continues to be the only nonprofit organization that operates a 24-hour multilingual crisis line.
