Mission Statement
Prairie Farm Corps, a program of the Liberty Prairie Foundation, is a job training program on an organic farm that provides immersion and mentoring in sustainable agriculture, gardening and farm-to-table cooking. Through their work in the fields, the kitchen, the farmers market and at food distribution sites crew members develop job skills applicable to any career like teamwork, collaborative problem solving, effective communication and customer service.
About This Cause
Prairie Farm Corps is both a professional development program and an outreach program for the local food movement. By immersing and mentoring our students in farming, gardening, and cooking we equip them with powerful skills which increase individual, family and community health and quality of life. At the same time these skills are critical to the flourishing of a local food system. Our students leave our program with a summer full of transformative experiences and memories, having grown and cooked invigorating local food for themselves, their friends, their families and the community. They leave knowing that any number of roles critical to the expansion of a local food system lay within their grasp. Some will pursue careers in sustainable agriculture. Others will become skilled backyard gardeners, or professional chefs who demand the freshest produce. All leave having tasted the goodness of fresh produce, empowered to cook well for their families and friends, and much more informed in navigating the complexities of today's food system. We also believe that there is no better endeavor than food production to build character. When you cultivate the soil, you cultivate your soul. If you teach a human how to garden, they will not only eat well, but they will feed their community. Whether in the fields, in the kitchen, at the market, or community service center, our program provides countless opportunities for our students to develop their character and sharpen interpersonal skills critical to success at in any career. Our program both provides training in effective communication, teamwork, work ethic, customer service, interviewing, and receiving and implementing critical feedback AND real life opportunities to put these skills into practice in every aspect of our program. In daily team meetings and weekly performance reviews we reflect with our students collectively and individually on their progress in each area. Ultimately we utilize the cultivation of vegetables to cultivate character. We do so not merely because we love youth development, which we do, but because the challenges that must be overcome to build a resilient local food system will require a resilient, passionate and wise local workforce. We strive to cultivate a crop of Prairie Farm Corps alumni capable of that task.
