Mission Statement

About This Cause

History and Services In 1954, a pediatrician asked Claire Haverkampf, R.N. to provide foster care to an infant named Mark William Lund who was born with Down Syndrome and severe cardiac complications. Claire and her husband Stan started providing care to Mark five days later in their own home. As word spread, their family grew with many more foster children with special needs. This act set the foundation for Marklund. Since its founding, Marklund ensures that high-quality programs and services are available to children and adults with developmental disabilities. Recognizing the growing numbers of those in need of specialized services, and the availability of new technology to assist in serving this population, Marklund has continued to evolve, today offering the following programs and services: • 24-hour residential services for 174 individuals with severe and profound developmental disabilities; • Developmental training/pre-vocational day programming for adults with developmental disabilities and an individualized community integration program; • Therapy services (provided by on-staff therapists) including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Music Therapy, Recreational Therapy, Aquatic Therapy (new/expanded program) on site in heated pool; • Day School programming for children, teens and young adults with multiple special needs, emotional and learning disabilities, and those on the Autism spectrum; • REST (Respite Education and Support Tools) training program for community-based volunteer respite care workers.
