About This Cause

RML is a nonprofit specialty hospital serving patients, referred from traditional hospitals, with complex needs requiring extended acute care and time to heal. RML, along with its partners, Loyola University Health System and Advocate Health Care, brings clinical expertise, research, and a culture of caring to patients on their way to better health. Who is RML Specialty Hospital? RML is a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH). As defined by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), LTACHs serve patients with complex medical needs requiring long-term hospitalization in an acute setting. These patients are critically ill with multi-system complications or failures. Many LTACH patients are admitted directly from short-stay hospital intensive care units with respiratory/ ventilator-dependent or other complex medical conditions. LTACHs differ from chronic care settings in that they focus on treating critically ill or high acuity patients in an intensive way, using specialized treatment programs geared to the patient’s illness and requirements. The goal is medical recovery and return to the home and family. The average length of stay at RML is 32 days. Over 65 hospitals in the Chicago metropolitan area refer patients to RML. Services provided at RML include: - Respiratory care and ventilator management and weaning - Comprehensive and medically complex rehabilitation - Wound management
