Mission Statement

Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation is a not-for-profit Illinois corporation. Helps educational and religious institutions in Ukraine to meet present needs and develop endowments for the future. Promotes public awareness and distributes material about Ukrainian history, culture and spirituality, fostering a deeper knowledge in the United States of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Provides opportunities both for Ukrainian students to study or intern in North America and for North American teachers and professors to volunteer in Ukraine. Supports academic research on the history of Ukraine and promotes the liturgical life of contemporary Catholics as they rebuild the Church in Ukraine. Collects books and other educational resources in the United States to rebuild libraries of Catholic institutions in Ukraine.

About This Cause

UCEF’s primary activity is fundraising for Catholic educational institutions in Ukraine, and specifically, for the Ukrainian Catholic University (“UCU”) located in Lviv, Ukraine. UCU, formally founded in 1997, (on the foundation of historically significant theological institutions that were disbanded or operated underground during Soviet rule) is, now, the only Catholic university in the former Soviet Union. UCU is an open academic community living the Eastern Christian tradition, educating leaders to serve with the highest ethical standards of professional excellence in Ukraine and internationally – for the glory of God, the common good, and the dignity of the human person. UCU is at the forefront of creating a new Ukraine, a civil society, following Ukraine’s struggle to shake off decades of communist rule (during which the Ukrainian Catholic Church was illegal). UCU is now developing as a preeminent institution of higher education in Ukraine, laying the foundation to build a society based on Western ideals of transparency, the rule of law, compassion, and respect for others. UCEF’s mission is to connect and support UCU with those who will help UCU thrive as a leading educational institution and help it educate generations of leaders (and donors) who care about Ukraine’s future. Committed to personal involvement and high standards, UCEF works with UCU to meet its present needs and develop resources for the future. UCEF’s fundraising activities include donor and event activities, grant and endowment programs, distribution of books and teaching materials, and collaborative volunteer projects emphasizing foreign exchange of students and faculty. UCEF’s fundraising activities focus on connecting Ukrainians in the United States, as well as Roman Catholics in the West with the largest Eastern Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
