Mission Statement

As Irish Theatre of Chicago enters our third decade producing theatre in Chicago under our new branding; our mission continues to honor the traditions of the Seanachaí (our former moniker - Gaelic for "storyteller") through open collaboration with all of our artists to create compelling, award-winning and critically acclaimed productions.

About This Cause

On the verge of celebrating our 21st birthday, ITC has grown into Chicago’s premiere Irish theatre Ensemble. The mission of ITC is to return theatre to its origin - by creating compelling productions and programs that focus the energy of artists toward the common goal of exceptional storytelling (echoing to our previous moniker, Seanachaí – the Gaelic word for storyteller). To achieve this end, ITC strives to provide an atmosphere where all theatre artists - actors, playwrights, directors, technicians and designers - have the support and assurance to collaborate openly. Since 1995, ITC has produced some of the most critically acclaimed productions in the highly competitive Chicago theatre scene. Each year - as our Ensemble continues to develop and evolve - our ability to produce hard-hitting drama and successful original works equally matures. And, as we launch the beginning of our third decade together - we are proud to say that we are producing our best work to date. Under our former name, Seanachaí, ITC began its journey with the production of And Neither Have I Wings to Fly... written by Seanachaí emeritus, Ann Noble. The production opened at the Body Politic on April 23, 1995 and closed on November 19, 1995 with 115 performances. This play served as a springboard for a collaboration to explore the heart and soul of storytelling. And Neither Have I Wings to Fly… garnered critical acclaim including New City – Best Play, a nomination for the American Theatre Critics Association’s Osborn Award for Emerging Playwright and a nomination for American Theatre Critics Association’s Award for Best New Work. Driven by this work, its critical momentum and the camaraderie of this group of artists compelled to tell heartfelt and emotionally gripping stories, Seanachaí Theatre Company was born. Following in the footsteps of And Neither Have I Wings to Fly…, ITC has produced 27 critically acclaimed and recognized productions, including 7 world premieres, 2 U.S. premieres and several midwest premieres. Specifically of note: 6 Equity Wing Joseph Jefferson Awards, 18 Equity Wing Joseph Jefferson nominations and two national playwrighting awards. Most importantly, we are honored to have established a following of supporters and subscribers who regularly attend our performances, benefits and events, and it is their encouragement and support that fufills our desire to connect with our audience. Defining Irish theatre in Chicago… With Ensemble and collaboration at the heart of our playing - ITC believes in fostering new Irish works and premieres as well as providing a fresh perspective on more established Irish plays and playwrights. And, while many factors contribute to our play selection, storytelling and connecting with our audience remain at the forefront of our standards in choice of material. The 2015-2016 season will mark ITC’s 21st season as a Chicago cultural institution. We are now laser focused on solidifying our place in this artistic community as the sole professional Irish theatre company in Chicago. This major element of our vision has moved to the forefront of our mission. By producing only Irish stories and/or Irish playwrights, we continue to distinguish and differentiate ourselves from every other theatre company in Chicago. Also, we believe we have multitudes of fantastic material to pull from in this specific genre; stories that really seem to resonate with both our Irish and non-Irish audiences. For the future, our goals are clear: we want to continue to grow and cement ourselves as an artistic force in our city, bringing the unique voices of Irish playwrights and plays to an ever-widening circle of audiences.
