Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Club to inspire all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

About This Cause

The Boys & Girls Club of Lake County serves an average of 250 youth per day, ages 6 through high school at 9 Club sites located in Waukegan and North Chicago, IL. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. The Club is a safe place to learn and grow – all while having fun. It is the place where great futures are started each and every day. Club Staff, facilities, programming and age-appropriate settings create stability, consistency and a sense of physical and emotional safety for members. The Club provides structure and clearly defines acceptable behaviors. Boys & Girls Club of Lake County believes every child has the potential to BE GREAT. In support of this strong conviction, we strive to build caring and responsible citizens. The Boys & Girls Club of Lake County family – a community of staff, volunteers, parents, youth and supporters – work together to create a positive place, full of hope and opportunity, for every child. Every child deserves a great future. Yet many of our children in Lake County are in crisis. Consider these alarming facts: In Lake County, over 24,000 residents live in extreme poverty, 16 percent of Lake County’s youth are food insecure, and schools in the areas we serve have dropout rates of over 50 percent. The communities we serve are home to 6 of the state's worst performing schools. At the Club, we provide thousands of hours of programming that foster academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. We provide consistent support to our children through caring staff and mentors. There’s an often overlooked, yet essential, component to transforming kids’ lives: out-of-school time. Every day, thousands of youth in Lake County leave school with no place to go, putting them at risk of being unsupervised, unguided and unsafe. During the summer, the numbers are even more alarming; children with no safe place to go and a serious lack of access to summer learning programs. This significantly increases their risk of learning loss, putting them at an even greater disadvantage. What happens during these hours can significantly impact a child’s path. Nearly one-third of all violent crime committed by juvenile offenders occurs during afterschool hours. By providing access to positive and productive afterschool and summer programs, we can help reverse the most negative trends facing our youth. Boys & Girls Club of Lake County is redefining the opportunity equation for at-risk kids by elevating the critical role of out-of-school time. It takes the knowledge, skills and behaviors kids learn both in school and out-of-school to put our young people on the right path. The Club has been serving the community for 24 years and together, we’ve seen the impact. Over the summer, 98% of Club youth improved or maintained learning aptitude; 100% of Club youth have on-time grade progression; 92% of Club parents have seen an increase in their youth's ability to make good decisions; 50,000 meals were served and for some of our youth, it is their last meal of the day. By providing access to positive and productive afterschool and summer programs as well as caring adult mentors, we can help reverse the most negative trends facing our youth.
