Mission Statement

Farmers Rising builds sustainable local food and farm systems through experiential education and training programs in partnership with rural and urban people.

About This Cause

At Farmers Rising, we lift up the people doing local and regenerative farming. We create space for you to learn alongside other growers and farmers, improve your business and production skills, and connect with eaters, partners and local food advocates of all ages and walks of life. Our work to build sustainable local food and farm systems honors the people working the land, recognizes healthy food as a human right, and dismantles extractive food systems...putting us at the forefront of farmer training. Our Initiatives are designed to address the food system on multiple levels, supporting and training the farmers who produce Good Food, providing access and paths to leadership within the movement, and ensuring that market demand continues to grow to provide needed income and stability for farmers. The Farmer Training Initiative’s purpose is to provide holistic training for beginning farmers in the upper Midwest region. To best serve our farmers, we work with a farmer steering committee to determine the key strengths and barriers to success for beginning farmers and develop programming to specifically address these barriers and the expressed needs of our farmers at different stages of farm development. Our team is committed to equity and has seen significant growth in the number of socially and systemically marginalized farmers who participate in our programming due to larger geographic accessibility via online learning, targeted scholarships, and increased diversity in leadership positions at all levels. Farmers Rising Rockford operates a community-supported agriculture (CSA) urban farm in the midst of a majority Black community. This community, a Rockford Housing Authority (RHA) development known as Blackhawk Courts, is situated in one of Rockford, Illinois’ food deserts. Farmers Rising Rockford is a program led by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), which has consistently provided access to fresh fruits and vegetables and vital educational opportunities to its immediate public housing community’s residents since 2002. Our Community Education program addresses the issue of market demand by developing the next generation of consumers who value Good Food. Our agricultural campus transforms into a living classroom that addresses the need for environmental education that connects the dots between agriculture, food, and health. Less than 2% of the population is currently farming, so most people have little direct experience with how food is grown, processed, and transported to their plates. By engaging participants in the physical activities of farm-life, and providing hands-on instructional workshops on topics like cheese-making, preserving, and raw food, our programs and overnight farm camps provide a one-of-a-kind field-to-fork experience of the food production system.
