Mission Statement

The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ Philanthropic and Mission Office (IHM PDO) believes that every person has the right to a dignified life. However, we see problems of poverty and illiteracy, lack of access to education and quality health care, neglect of women, children, the elderly and the under privileged and displaced communities. With this, we provide food, clothing, medical treatment and shelter; education and scholarship, sustainable livelihood and ongoing values formation. We commit, with humble service and compassion, to the upliftment of lives and to making this world a better place for all. The mission we carry out in the world is articulated in seven areas called Advocacies. These are Community Health Development; Education/Scholarship; Climate Sustenance, Formation; Pastoral Care; Care for Vulnerable Persons and Infrastructure and Equipment Procurement/Upgrade.

About This Cause

We, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mother of Christ, founded on the 7th of October 1937 by Archbishop Charles Heerey CSSp to serve the people of God especially the poor and the less privileged with Humility and Compassion, are committed to the effective administration of the common good for the use of all people to live a dignified life. The Philanthropic Development Office (IHM PDO) coordinates all the activities of the different missions and advocacies we carry out in the service of the poor and the less privileged of the societies we serve. Through this office and its operations, we work to identify and seek out resources to enable us to plan and execute effectively all the programs of the different advocacies we embark on in order to serve better the people around us especially the poor and the less privileged. On community health development, IHM Sisters seek to offer compassionate and holistic health care to persons afflicted with disease. All of our hospitals and maternities are not-for-profit agencies. We offer care to those who cannot afford the cost of treatment especially in different countries in Africa. We open and run rural health clinics and maternities dependent solely on charitable contributions as most of the persons in rural areas may not afford medical care. Aside from medical care, our health centers offer health programs mostly educating women on health issues. We run awareness programs to address holistic development to individuals, institutions, and organizations. Given how religion permeates societies in Africa, we enjoy a great deal of trust among our people. Our Education/Scholarship Advocacy comprises of all schools we manage and/or have sisters in. As of January 2020, we own a total of 22 Grade Schools, 16 High Schools, and three health schools. We have a presence in other 52 Grade Schools and 22 High Schools owned by Dioceses and others. These schools offer scholarships to indigent students. Each year, there are more than 30 young women being trained as nurses in our Institute on scholarship. The number of kids on scholarship in Grade Schools runs in the hundreds. About 100 kids are on scholarship in our High Schools. Normally, our scholarships cover Tuition, Room and Board and even needs for the family of the recipient. On Environmental Sustainability, our Sisters engage in means of cultivation of land both for production and preservation. We have farms and animal husbandry at subsistence and cooperative levels. We plant Palm Trees in one of the States in Nigeria and teach the Youth about the danger of depleting the Earth’s Resources. We have a fish farm where we use only natural products to raise fish. Our bread industry does not produce for profit and we have stipulated quantity we give out to the poor every day. We are embarking on a project to have a constant power supply at our Boarding schools through Solar Energy. Formation is a process of preparation for young girls who express interest in joining the Institute. On a broader note, every Sister is under formation through on-going formation till death. The stages of Initial formation include Aspirancy, Postulancy, Novitiate, Scholasticate, and Temporary Profession. Each stage of formation entails keeping the young girls in a house designated for formation for them to embark on a journey of self-discovery, learning the rudiments of Religious Life according to our Institute, and discernment. We have formation houses in Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya. This Advocacy includes the training we give to sisters after an initial profession to prepare them for mission in the world. Each year some sisters are sent to different regions on Sabbatical leave. We raise funds to make this experience worthwhile for the Sisters. Care for Vulnerable Persons: At individual, communal, and Institute level, there are always persons who depend on our charity to feed, clothe, get an education, and basically live. This population includes Persons Living with HIV/AIDS for whom we have two homes; Retirement Home for our Elderly Sisters and two for Lay Persons (no one pays anything here); Widows’ Apostolate- we build houses for vulnerable widows, care for them and bury them when they die; Youth Ministry and Mental Care for Young People located in Awka, Nigeria; Hope Children’s Home, Kenya; Family Light of the Nation Apostolate; and IHM Boarding Home for Girls in Sierra Leone. On Pastoral Care, we have programs on Faith Formation, Music Ministry, Pastoral Care of the Sick at Homes and Hospitals, and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Training for Sisters. Infrastructure and Equipment Upgrading: We recognize our need for well-planned infrastructure in shaping the community. In order to carry out our mission effectively, we need adequate and quality amenities with standard tools to respond to the demands of time. We need certain medical equipment to replace our obsolete ones at our three hospitals in Nkpor, Enugu, Aba, and Urualla- Nigeria.
