About This Cause
Safe Humane Chicago's mission is to create safe and humane communities by inspiring positive relationships between people and animals. We are an alliance of non-traditional partners that focus on the benefits of the human-animal bond. Programming provides education, advocacy and second chances for people and dogs impacted by marginalization, trauma or poverty in three key areas: youth leadership, community engagement, collaborative justice. Youth Leadership • Youth Leaders: High school students teach peers and children in disadvantaged communities about the humane treatment of companion animals, why animal abuse is bad, and how to keep people and dogs safe around each other. • Lifetime Bonds: Incarcerated teens bond with, socialize, and train shelter dogs for adoption. In turn, they develop skills needed to re-enter the community and are offered internships with Safe Humane Chicago. • Neighborhood-based classes: In dog-training-focused classes in disadvantaged communities, youth develop skills with their own dogs and break stereotypes about relationships with dogs. Safe Humane “Court Case Dogs” • Court Case Dogs have “done the time but not the crime.” They were seized in abuse investigations and impounded; relinquished by owners or in court; assessed by Safe Humane; exercised, socialized, trained and loved by volunteers; placed in good homes by partnering rescue groups; and offered behavior support by Safe Humane. Collaborative Justice • Collaboration & Training: Police, prosecutors, judges and other court-related professionals, including judges and animal control, are trained and engaged about enforcing animal-related laws, effective sentencing and humanely treating animals trapped in the judicial system. • Court Advocacy: Volunteer Court Advocates follow and report on court cases involving animal abuse of all kinds and advocate for the victimized animals and people.
