Save The Waves Coalition is an international surf conservation nonprofit dedicated to protecting surf ecosystems with a goal of protecting 1,000 waves by 2030.
About This Cause
Save The Waves Coalition (STW) is an international nonprofit working in over 11 countries with diverse organizations dedicated to protecting surf ecosystems: the land-to-sea interface that creates the conditions for breaking, rideable waves, and the flora and fauna and human communities that are dependent upon it. We build coalitions to protect, steward, and defend surf ecosystems through a unique combination of protected area creation, stewardship, and grassroots mobilization. We believe legally protected areas, effective stewardship and a mobilized constituency result in healthy and protected surf ecosystems. This is why we focus on places around the world where iconic surfing waves overlap with biodiversity hotspots and habitats that are critically important for marine conservation to reach our goal of protecting 1,000 waves by 2030. We achieve our goals through three primary programs: World Surfing Reserves, Surf Protected Areas, and Campaigns. Save The Waves' flagship program proactively identifies, designates and preserves outstanding waves, surf zones and their surrounding environments around the world. These World Surfing Reserves (WSRs) represent a global network of designated surfing reserves that are managed, implemented, and protected by local communities. Save The Waves Coalition currently has 12 WSRs and growing! The Surf Protected Area (SPA) program is a new approach for marine and coastal conservation that combines the legal protection of ecosystems with sustainable community development. Save The Waves implements this program across the globe on a national level in Costa Rica, The Azores, Mexico and Chile in coalition with local partners. Our campaigns inspire action that result in conservation. We partner with local communities and movements to mitigate and defeat immediate threats, or to preemptively protect surf ecosystems before they can be destroyed or altered. We respond to these situations in a diverse number of ways. Using our experience and platform, we attempt to provide expert advice, strategies, and support for all inquiries.
