About This Cause

MAS Social Service Foundation has trained volunteers from various educational and ethnic backgrounds to offer peer counseling. MAS Social Services Foundation is providing a peer counseling service to our community in the following areas: Individual Couples Family Teen Peer counseling services are offered in Arabic, Bengali, Dari, English, Farsi, French, Gujarati, Hindi, Pashto, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Urdu. Strict confidentiality is maintained. MAS Social Service Foundation is also offering a Pre-Martial course for engaged and/or married couples in their first year of marriage. This one-on-one course, 6 sessions – 2 hour each, deals with: Basis of marriage Communication Self-awareness Spirituality Finance and values Community Education Workshops Counseling 101 This workshop will answer the following questions: What is counseling? What is the goal of counseling? What happens in a counseling session? How does counseling help families and individuals? What are true and what are false ideas people have about counseling? How can we reduce the stigma associated with mental health and counseling? (Recommended Audience: Youth and adults) Bullying: What Parents & Youth Need to Know This workshop will equip parents and youth with knowledge about the complex issue of bullying. Information will include recognizing bullying, responding effectively, preventing bullying, and working with schools for a positive outcome. (Recommended Audience: Youth 12 and up, adults) Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact and overviews appropriate supports. This 8-hour course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect people to the appropriate professional, peer, social and self-help care. The program also teaches common risk factors and warning signs of specific illnesses like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and schizophrenia. (Recommended Audience: Adults 18 and up, some exceptions will be made for those under 18) Parenting Young Children This workshop discusses positive parenting which focuses on prevention and positive interventions. Parents will gain knowledge about effective parenting styles, the difference between punishment vs. discipline, how to effectively manage challenging behaviors, and how to foster qualities such as respect, responsibility, and resilience. (Recommended audience: Parents of young children) Parenting Teens This workshop will discuss what to expect during the teen years, differentiate between typical teen behaviors vs. problematic behaviors, identify typical issues in raising teens today, and explore both proactive and reactive research-based practical parenting strategies. (Recommended Audience: Parents of young children and teens) How to Become a Muslim Foster Family in 3 Steps Our community is in dire need of Muslim foster parents. This workshop will provide information about the process and will walk individuals, either single or married, through the three (3) steps of becoming licensed foster parents. (Recommended Audience: Adults)
