About This Cause
Vision 21 Concepts, Inc. (Vision 21), is a cutting-edge community service organization established with the goal in mind to promote reconciliation, restoration, and renewal for the economically challenged and homeless persons in the Douglas County, Georgia and surrounding areas. In November 1999, Vision 21 was formed as a community service agency with the purpose of transforming people and places in a myriad of ways. The Executive Director, Rev. Dr. Edwin Ford, who at the time was the Community Service Coordinator of the Georgia Department of Corrections Probation Division, established Vision 21 to provide probationers as volunteers to agencies in Douglas County such as, The S.H.A.R.E. House (a safe haven for women alluding domestic violence), the Douglas County Food Bank, the Douglas County Homeless Shelter, the Douglas County Historic Commission, the school system, and a number of children and senior citizens associations. The organization embarked on several projects which would leave a lasting impact on the Douglas County community such as the restoration and rehabilitation of the Chapel Hill Courthouse, preservation of the Liberty Grove (slave) Cemetery and the old Douglas County Courthouse, and the donation of computers to kids. On September 26, 2005, Vision 21 was formed as a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. The organization’s mission is to enable at-risk youth, economically disadvantaged individuals and families, persons with disabilities, reentering offenders and the homeless community to strive academically and towards self-sufficiency. We dedicate ourselves to creating and sustaining communities through equipping people with the tools and techniques they need to excel in their lives. In April 2007 Vision 21 established The Door Transitional Housing Program (The Door) which provides comprehensive services and transitional housing for chronically homeless men over a six-month period. The men are housed in residential single-family homes. Our target population is in the Douglas, Cobb, Carroll, Paulding and Fulton Counties. The Door program services help homeless men make a positive adjustment that gives them the opportunity to remain out of the criminal justice system and places not designated for human habitation, including street, cars and abandoned buildings. In addition to providing housing, Vision 21 provides supportive services for our clients such as case management, life skills training, employability skills training, substance abuse and mental health support groups, financial literacy and self-sufficiency training that will help the men understand their past actions, accept responsibility for these actions and learn from them. In August 2009, Vision 21 became an approved agency for Georgia State Pardons and Parole Re-Entry Partnership Housing Program. This program is a means to provide housing to convicted felons who remain in prison after the Parole Board has authorized their release due solely to having no residential options. Vision 21 provides released offenders stable housing and food (room and board). Vision 21 dedicates itself to creating and sustaining communities through equipping people with tools and techniques to excel in their lives. The Door program and the Re-Entry Program provides for individual transition plans that address issues confronting chronically homeless men as they return to the community and reconnect with their families. Additionally, homeless men with criminal records have a negative impact on their ability to find and hold jobs which, in turn, makes it more difficult to connect or reconnect with their families. These interrelated problems often result in fathers being estranged or isolated from their families. The result is devastating for fathers who lose the opportunity to play a positive role in their families and even more devastating for their children who miss out on all the nurturing, caring, teaching, and guidance that fathers have to offer. The Door program and the Re-Entry program provides job training so that men can gain skills needed to obtain and retain gainful employment. Job training and fatherhood training among homeless men and reentering offenders, for instance, will reduce the incidence of recidivism. At Vision 21, our Housing Programs provide essential, safe, and clean housing to individuals experiencing homelessness, supporting their journey toward independence, dignity, and hope. Each year, we assist an average of 216 clients in achieving self-reliance. Our programs are designed as a structured continuum, where each service builds on the last to support clients in transitioning from homelessness to self-sufficient living. By offering tailored housing options and comprehensive support, we create environments that meet the diverse needs of our clients. Services include emergency, transitional, and long-term housing, along with outreach initiatives, food support, and community living programs. In addition to helping individuals learn from past actions and take responsibility for their futures, our programs enhance community safety, security, and well-being. Vision 21 leverages resources through strategic partnerships and collaborative efforts with local and state agencies, community organizations, and other service providers to address the complex needs of homeless individuals. By working closely with various local nonprofits, Vision 21 combines funding, expertise, and infrastructure to deliver a wide range of services, from housing assistance to employability training and substance abuse support. The organization optimizes these relationships to maximize the impact of its programs, ensuring that resources are utilized efficiently and effectively to benefit the clients it serves. Vision 21’s approach includes pooling resources such as funding for transitional housing, access to food distribution programs, and support services for community reintegration, creating a comprehensive pathway for individuals to achieve independence. Through these collaborations, Vision 21 not only enhances its capacity to provide direct assistance but also strengthens the overall safety net for economically challenged and homeless populations in the community.
