Mission Statement

The problem is that historic discrimination and disinvestment made Troost Avenue the racial and economic dividing line of our city. Today there are thousands of people struggling to survive and succeed, trapped in poverty and trauma. As a result, our city is divided and the strength of our neighbors and community remains hidden. Our Mission is to cultivate a community seeking reconciliation to transform Troost from a dividing line into a gathering place, revealing the strength of all. Our Vision is that Kansas City, no longer divided by Troost, is revealed as a thriving and vibrant community inspiring reconciliation across the nation. www.rs3101.org

About This Cause

RS has innovated an intentional continuum of care to reveal the strength of all. We work together to seek reconciliation, one heart at a time, through strengths-based Healthy Community Initiatives, Social Services, Mental Health Services, and the creation of Economic Community Building. HEALTHY COMMUNITY INITIATIVES RS Healthy Community programs and services include Thelma's Kitchen -- Kansas City's only Donate-What-You-Can Cafe and Community Outreach Programs. Thelma's Kitchen offers access to affordable, healthy food in an inviting and safe environment where ALL ARE WELCOME. The Kitchen fosters informed relationship building around shared meals. Go to www.thelmaskitchen.org to learn how it all works. Community Outreach Programs aimed at building vibrant community life are offered some Friday afternoons and include topics like art, cooking, healthy living, conflict management, finances, personal management and more. SOCIAL SERVICES Professional Case Managers work with individuals and families to meet emergency needs and develop customized treatment plans to accomplish immediate and long term goals. Housing and Utilities Assistance is available to qualifying RS clients at risk for having power disconnected or being evicted. Funded in part through the Housing Resource Commission. ID and Document Assistance is crucial for individuals working towards self-sufficiency. RS Case Workers help clients secure documents—birth certificates, Social Security cards, state IDs, etc.—needed to qualify for employment and benefits assistance. KC Medicine Cabinet provides clients with needed medications and medical supplies. Funded in part through the KC Medicine Cabinet, we are striving to build a healthier community. MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES RS Mental Health Services are comprised of two components: Mental Health Services and Case Management. This programming empowers men, women and families to build personal resiliency, find healing from trauma and depression, find meaningful life work, stable housing, stable income, and measurable hope. Mental Health Services include individual and group therapy, as well as aftercare support groups, available at no cost for persons suffering from trauma, depression and the effects of generational poverty. Our one-of-a-kind R.E.V.E.A.L. (Restore Engage Value Encourage Act Lead) program, funded by the Jackson County Cares Mental Health Fund, the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City, and Humana, is what we call "stealth mental health". It is promoted to emergency social services clients and community members as an encouragement group, but is run by a clinical therapist using proven evidence-based practices and clinical measures. This helps avoid the stigmas of mental health services and reduces barriers to care. ECONOMIC COMMUNITY BUILDING SERVICES Our Economic Community Building comprises two parts: the Foster Grandparents Program and RS Social Ventures, llc. This programming provides on-site volunteer and employment opportunities that bring new capital—both financial and social—into the community. RS Foster Grandparents Program recruits, trains and mobilizes low‐income senior adults to volunteer with young people in difficult public schools and other local children’s institutions. Foster Grandparents provide tutoring and mentoring services as well as an all‐important connection to a caring adult. Foster Grandparents serve at 31 civic institutions, including schools, hospitals, preschools and childcare centers in Jackson, Platte, and Clay counties. RS Social Ventures, llc, is a for‐profit C-Corp wholly owned subsidiary of Reconciliation Services. Unlike a job placement program or training program, RS Social Ventures has two objectives: (1) to provide living wage employment opportunities and meaningful work for individuals completing RS programs and for those living in the community; and, (2) to provide an ongoing source of revenue for RS nonprofit social services.
