Mission Statement

We believe that good emergency care extends beyond the walls of the emergency department. The Andrew Levitt Center for Social Emergency Medicine leads the transformation of emergency care to elevate the importance of home, community and society.

About This Cause

The Andrew Levitt Center aims to expand our understanding of the interplay of social forces and health as manifest at medicine’s doorstep, the modern emergency department, and to intervene when the interests of social justice demand. We seek to refine emergency medicine and emergency medical services to better respond to changes in population health, as well as to intervene in the social milieu to reduce health crises, improving population health and decompressing burdened emergency departments. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the depth of health inequality and the importance of social determinants of health in affecting health outcomes. It has also demonstrated the vital role of emergency departments as the threshold to medical and social services for a community. The value of social emergency medicine has never been so clear. It is because of generous donors like you that the Levitt Center can continue to foster innovative research to advance emergency care and provide programs that improve the lives of the patients and communities that need help the most.
