Mission Statement

We see a hungry kid. We buy food. We feed the kid. The Children's Hunger Project is in place to give hope to at-risk kids. Our objective is to nurture the body, mind, and heart of hungry elementary school-aged children in Brevard County. We aspire to provide these children with nutrition in a dignified and respectful manner giving them a reason to believe and the ability to thrive.

About This Cause

Over 60% of students in Brevard County schools qualify for the free and reduced meal program. Our recipients are kids that come from households that qualify for SNAP benefits as their household income meets the criteria of less than 130% of the federal poverty level. Because many of these kids go home to an empty pantry, The Children’s Hunger Project (TCHP) provides essential weekend nutrition, so they can return to school on Monday ready to learn. Each Friday, educators have the difficult decision of selecting which of their students will go home with the weekend food packs based on the greatest need. School staff members inform us that the demand is high, but with our current resources, we are unable to server all those in need. The Children’s Hunger Project provides weekend nutrition to at risk kids in Brevard County elementary schools. This program offers kid friendly choices that also meet high nutrition standards; foods that children need for growth, development and overall health. Studies show proper nourishment provides children with a higher health-related quality of life and is especially essential to their development and well-being. So many of the kids we serve do not have the ability to provide for themselves and we willingly take on the task to support their need. Each week, volunteers work the assembly line at our location in Cocoa stuffing bags with kid friendly, school nutritionist approved items: fruit and vegetable juices, low fat milk, high protein and whole grain foods; nutrients children need for overall health. Food packs are picked up by volunteer drivers who deliver to 60 elementary schools in Brevard. Before kids leave school Friday, devoted teachers stuff backpacks with nutrition that benefits them through the weekend. While our staff educates volunteers on the importance of their contribution to the students, volunteers walk away feeling the value of being a part of this project. Many of these individuals have their eyes opened to the need in our community as they develop an appreciation for what we do and cultivate a desire for helping others.
