About This Cause
Mindful Kids Miami, Inc. (MKM) is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization dedicated to providing evidence-based, age-appropriate, and trauma-sensitive mindfulness available to children in our community. We primarily achieve this purpose by training educators, healthcare providers, and caregivers to embody and incorporate secular mindfulness practices for themselves and the children they serve. MKM’s programs are based upon the principles of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program created at the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Stress Reduction Clinic by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. Since Its inception in 1979, MBSR has achieved worldwide acclaim and its evidence-based benefits have been well documented for more than 40 years, showing a wide range of health advantages including but not limited to decreased stress, burnout, and physical pain, and increased focused attention, quality of relationships, and general feelings of well-being. Mindful Kids Miami was established in 2011 to bring the benefits of mindfulness to Miami-Dade County school educators and students. MKM developed the Mindful Teacher Training Program (MTTP) for educators and other adults who work with children. MBSR combined with the MTTP addresses the need for continued personal practice and experiential understanding of how to safely bring age-appropriate, trauma, and diverse sensitive mindfulness practices to the children they serve—learning and resilience for students, educators, and the entire school culture.
