Mission Statement

Achim is dedicated to welcoming the members of the Russian speaking Jewish population to Baltimore's larger Jewish community by providing experiences and programs for children, adults, seniors and families that serve this goal.

About This Cause

In 1989 as America opened their doors so graciously to hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees from the former Soviet Union, Baltimore resettled over 3,500 households. There was very little acculturation programs designed for these newly arrived members of the community. Paysach Diskind recognized the need and studied the Russian language until he was fluent for the purpose of welcoming these refugees. He met every family that arrived in Baltimore and was resttled by HIAS. Many families created bonds of friendship from which Achim began their constituency. Different programs were designed based on the needs and interest of this new population. As time moved on these arrivals found their careers and established homes and families. In spite of their success in resettling many households remained disconnected from the larger Jewish community. This population is now over 5,000 households and there is much work that continues to be done by Achim.
