Mission Statement
Central New York Ballet is an artist-centered, inclusive professional ballet company dedicated to uncompromising artistic excellence. We are changing lives through dance.
About This Cause
Launched in December 2023, we are a new organization of artists with a long history of ties to Syracuse and a deep bench of people with decades of experience directing and dancing in professional ballet companies in the U.S. and internationally. Our management team is comprised of business owners, attorneys, and others with extensive experience in the performing arts, determined to build on the rich tradition of ballet while also improving working conditions for dancers. We are humbled and inspired by the outpouring of support we have received in Syracuse and across the national dance community since our dancers were fired by Syracuse City Ballet in November 2023 for striking for better working conditions. Our inaugural season brought enthusiastic audiences to their feet show after show. We performed original choreography by Aldo Kattón by invitation in the Society for New Music’s Vision of Sound 2024 in February in Syracuse, Geneva (NY), and Rochester, our own production of Swan Lake, Bolero, and new original choreographic works by Kattón and Jared Allen Brunson at the OnCenter in Syracuse in April, by invitation at the Merge Festival with Breadcrumbs Productions and Deviant Dance Tribe in May, by invitation at CiTiBoces’ second annual black tie event at The Everson Museum in Syracuse also in May, at Central New York Pride 2024 in June, and by invitation at the Everson Museum in collaboration with East Coast Contemporary Ballet in July. We have presented outreach programs at The MOST Museum in collaboration with the Syracuse City School District, Northeast Community Center, Loretto Health & Rehabilitation, White Branch Library, Westcott Community Center, La Joyen Guardia del Teatro, and at various elementary schools in the Liverpool School District. Our inaugural Nutcracker, created for and with our community, will enrich the lives of children, performers, and our audiences and take ballet in Syracuse and Central New York to a new level of professionalism and artistry, with over 60 professional and student members of the community participating. During the rehearsal process, we give the emotional development of our youth casts the same attention we give to the development of their technical proficiency. Our artistic staff and professional dancers spend time sharing the historical and cultural relevance of the work being created, as well as imbuing the youth cast with the sense of magic and wonder that characterizes the classical ballet tradition. We want to reach people, from young to old and all walks of life, who may never have seen professional classical ballet before and introduce them to the rich and inspiring culture that is ballet. CNYB focuses on providing a safe space for artists of all ages to practice their craft at a competitive level, while introducing classical ballet to as many members of our diverse community as possible. We are creating a more artist-centered classical ballet company that lets dancers have more influence over the critical decisions that shape their lives, so we can continue to bring the joy and beauty of dance to the audience and help others do the same. Our talented team and dedication to excellence in the performing arts, social justice and dancer rights, and the training of pre-professional, aspiring artists is bringing a new level of artistic vibrance to Syracuse and Central New York. The New York Council on the Arts recognized the foundational change CNYB is bringing to Central New York and awarded us a $259,000 capital improvement grant to renovate the historic GereBlock building into a state-of-the-art professional studio and performance space that will bring opportunity and beauty to a distressed neighborhood. A first-rate arts sector contributes to the emotional and social well-being of everyone in the community. We spark the public imagination. We inspire people. We are a place for experimenting with new ways of looking at the world and seeing ourselves. Performing arts help create new understandings and personal growth and, and, on a basic level they provide entertainment and make life more enjoyable. CNY Ballet is a critical component of the performing arts sector in Central New York and would deeply appreciate your support in growing our organization to continue to serve audiences throughout the region.
