Mission Statement
The mission of NWRA is to improve and promote the profession of wildlife rehabilitation and its critical role in preserving natural ecosystems. Through our publications, online learning opportunities, and annual symposia, we serve as a resource hub and professional network for individuals and organizations engaged in the rescue, care, and release of wildlife.
About This Cause
Founded in 1982 during its first symposium in Naperville, Illinois, the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) was established by wildlife rehabilitators who recognized the urgent need for a centralized, national organization dedicated to advancing the profession. Over four decades later, NWRA remains the leading voice in wildlife rehabilitation, committed to enhancing the care of wild animals and promoting ecological health through education, professional development, and the establishment of best practices. NWRA's mission is simple: we are dedicated to improving and promoting the profession of wildlife rehabilitation and its contributions to preserving natural ecosystems. From publications to online courses to annual symposia, we provide educational and networking opportunities for anyone interested or involved in wildlife rehabilitation. Our goals are to: Improve wildlife rehabilitation care protocols, welfare, and outcomes: Peer-reviewed publications and educational opportunities enhance rehabilitators' abilities to provide effective and humane care based on professional standards, thereby improving wildlife welfare and rehabilitation outcomes. Enhance resource accessibility: Our organization focuses on increasing the availability of high-quality educational materials and standard-setting publications for wildlife rehabilitation practitioners and agencies. Knowledge dissemination: By facilitating knowledge sharing and adoption of best practices, NWRA's educational opportunities will contribute significantly to improving wildlife care and conservation efforts globally, resulting in increased biodiversity and intact ecosystems. The National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association focuses on educating wildlife rehabilitators through the development of peer-reviewed publications as well as online and in-person learning. We are requesting funds to help us continue offering educational opportunities for both our members and the public at large. The goal of our educational program is to advance the knowledge, skills, and confidence of wildlife rehabilitators and veterinary professionals at every stage of their career. Through a combination of in-depth lectures, hands-on workshops, and accessible online learning, we aim to provide high-quality, science-based education that reflects current best practices in wildlife medicine and rehabilitation. Our programming is designed to support both new and experienced practitioners, with special attention given to developing foundational courses for those just entering the field. By fostering a well-informed and skilled community, we strive to improve outcomes for wildlife and strengthen the profession as a whole. The focus of this funding request is to expand our online and in-person courses throughout the rest of the year on multiple subjects, including wildlife medicine, leadership, avian anesthesia, and more. Throughout the year, we will host over 350 students in these different courses with an international impact. To further expand our reach and support emerging professionals, we are currently developing new in-person and online workshops focused on Basic and Advanced Wildlife Rehabilitation. These essential offerings are designed specifically for new and at-home rehabilitators who are just beginning their journey into the field. Our first in-person Basics course is planned for this fall, with the Advanced course to follow shortly thereafter
