Mission Statement
We are a non-profit organization that provides after-school arts programming to area youth at no cost to the community, the schools, or the families we serve. 2019 was our tenth year providing this program, driven by volunteers, donors, and grant writing.
About This Cause
Our program has served area youth in an after-school program where kids are instructed by area artists in all art mediums including, stained glass, warm glass fusion, wheel pottery, glazing and kiln firing, precious metal clay, mosaics, acrylics, oils, watercolors, alcohol ink art, ink wash.......and much more. Original intent was to provide youth with options other than sports, which tends to dominate small communities like Guttenberg. We believe that many kids only go out for sports because they want to be accepted, not necessarily because they really want to play sports. Those kids can spend every practice and every game sitting out as there are only so many players, who typically always play 90% of the game time. The self esteem hit these kids get from sitting out, or simply by not going out for sports at all, can be life changing. Our program provides a sense of belonging with opportunities for self expression through creativity. And by partnering kids and adult volunteers/artists, we provide a natural support system. This program has a large impact on the community by being a tourist destination for many years. During the summer months, the studio becomes available as a “paint you own pottery” studio that also provides opportunities to work with wheel pottery, stained glass, warm glass, and mosaics. Many private parties, family gatherings, corporate groups, and workshops have been provided bu the studio space. All proceeds support the Center. Our first floor Gallery supports area artists by exhibiting their art and providing them with a venue to sell their art. This s accomplished through consignments supporting both the artist and the Center. To date, we have held numerous artist receptions, live music events, community events, and Farm to Table meals utilizing our attached outdoorCourtyard. We are currently wanting to secure funding to build a community stage in the Courtyard to provide live music, community playhouse events,improv, speakers, and other events. Attached to our Gallery is a small commercial kitchen. Currently it provides Espresso drinks, Fresh Fruit Smoothies, Baked Nibbles, and a Sunday Brunch. This is a youth driven program we would like to expand to a full service Cafe. Pre covid, we provided the community with an annual art festival, Art By the River along our river walk on the Mississippi River. Three annual events were provided entirely by this organization and fiscal sponsors. It is our hope to resume Art By the River in 2022. Like many organizations, covid hit us very hard. Without 100% volunteer staff, a working Board, grants, and generous donors, we would cease to exist.
