Mission Statement
Founded in Paris France in 1833, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international, Catholic, lay organization that helps those in need. The Society is not a social service agency, we are a person to person Catholic ministry that sees the face of Christ in the face of those who are suffering. No act of charity is unknown to St. Vincent de Paul. All are welcome to join us as members, and all are welcome at our door. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Detroit (SVdPD) feeds families, provides beds, warm clothes, energy assistance and other urgent needs through our outreach programs. Assistance is provided to people through a local network of conferences, which are predominantly associated with Catholic parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit. Conferences are made up of groups of individual members called Vincentians, who volunteer to minister to those needing assistance by making in-home visits. With compassion, empathy, respect and gratitude, they nurture a one-on-one relationship to better understand and satisfy the material and spiritual needs of those they serve. Last year alone, SVdPD made over 45,000 home visits and served over 300,000 neighbors. Home visits are what differentiate the Society from other organizations. They allow us to see with our heart, to see the possible in every human being, and to see ourselves in them. And through these visits, men and women grow in friendship and spirituality through service.
