About This Cause

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History stands as a beacon of cultural richness and historical significance in Detroit. As a testament to the legacy of Dr. Charles H. Wright and the tireless dedication of countless individuals, this institution continues to illuminate our understanding of African American history and heritage. Spanning 125,000 square feet, the museum's architectural grandeur is matched only by the importance of the work that unfolds within its walls. It is, without a doubt, a cultural jewel in Detroit, enriching both the local community and the broader region. One of the museum's most profound contributions is its commitment to education. Annually, it opens its doors to nearly 20,000 Title I students, providing them with an invaluable opportunity to connect with their heritage and gain a deeper understanding of the African American experience. Additionally, the museum warmly welcomes over 500,000 children and families, fostering a sense of unity and belonging through a diverse range of exhibits and programs. At the heart of the Charles H. Wright Museum are its exhibits, which total ten in number. Among these, two are permanent fixtures, serving as cornerstones of knowledge and reflection. The remaining four ongoing exhibits and four changing exhibits ensure that every visit to the museum is a unique and enriching experience. This past year alone, the museum has opened its doors to a remarkable 11 traveling exhibits, each carrying its own compelling story and perspective. Furthermore, it has organized an impressive 350 public programs dedicated to children and families. These programs serve as vibrant threads that weave together the tapestry of cultural understanding and appreciation. In every corner of the Charles H. Wright Museum, history comes to life. It is a place where narratives are shared, stories are preserved, and the voices of the past resonate with the present. As we step into this extraordinary institution, we are invited to embark on a journey of discovery, enlightenment, and inspiration. The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is more than just a museum; it is a living tribute to the enduring spirit and contributions of African Americans. It is a place where history is celebrated, and where the present is illuminated by the lessons of the past. This institution is a true cultural gem, and it stands as a testament to the power of education, diversity, and unity.
