Mission Statement
NASCO provides educational and movement-building serves to promote participation in cooperative enterprises, especially community-oriented housing co-ops and student co-ops.
About This Cause
NASCO was created in 1968 by student cooperative leaders seeking to expand cooperative practices across North America. Cooperatives are a business form that retains control among the users of a business rather than outside investors, thus ensuring that the products or services of the business will continue to be provided to the customers as long as the business is viable. Housing cooperatives, particularly those serving students and young people, fill a critical need for quality housing, community of the home, and economic empowerment that is unserved by slumlords, college dorms, and monopolistic "luxury" rental housing. NASCO provides educational and training programs to student and housing cooperatives that support members, board directors, and staff. Our peer networks facilitate on-going improvements in best practices and the development of leadership skills in the cooperative movement. Over 3,000 residents participate in the day-to-day management and governance of NASCO-member co-op houses every year. Through our training and support, these people are able to successfully live and breath cooperation in their daily lives and thus learn how to engage with the economic world not as passive consumers, but as active members, co-managers, and citizens. In order to grow the availability of affordable, empowering, community-oriented housing in the US, NASCO also provides fee-for-serve property management, leasing, and development services.
