Mission Statement
To provide programs that guide, support and empower individuals to achieve self-sufficiency with dignity and hope.
About This Cause
UCFS prides itself on providing truly wrap-around programs and services to families and individuals to support them as holistically as possible to help them reach their goals with dignity. UCFS programs are all linguistically accessible and culturally competent and include: Sustainable Steps Program: The Sustainable Steps Program (SSP) provides critical social services and evidence-based case management to families and individuals in need, primarily refugees and immigrants. Clients are provided with linguistically accessible and culturally competent support to put them on a path to move beyond poverty and the ALICE Threshold to thrive in their new home with dignity and hope. Services include, but are not limited to, employment services, benefits assistance, translation and interpretation, healthcare navigation, financial literacy, and more. Sharehouse Food Pantry: The Sharehouse Food Pantry distributes food monthly and as needed, providing lean meats, dairy products, fresh produce, whole grains, non-perishables, and culturally familiar foods. This Food Pantry Program operates twice monthly serving over 2,600 people or 700 households with an average of 70 pounds of food per month. The Sharehouse Basic Needs Center is fondly named for its purpose - sharing. The Sharehouse provides furniture, kitchenware, bedding, towels, clothing, school supplies, baby items, personal hygiene items, holiday decor and supplies, and so much more. To eliminate the barrier of transportation, UCFS delivers large items like furniture and mattresses. Citizenship and Integration Program: Funded by United States Citizenship and Integration Services, UCFS' Citizenship and Integration Program assists hundreds of refugees and asylees in becoming new US citizens every year. We provide integration services and case management, English as a Second Language courses, Citizenship Instruction courses, application assistance, and one-on-one mock interview practice. The program maintains a notable 95% pass rate, and we are honored to help our clients enjoy the benefits and security of citizenship. Maternal Health Education Program: The Maternal Health Education Program (MHEP) utilizes program staff and healthcare professionals to provide linguistically accessible and culturally competent information and resources to prospective, soon-to-be, and new mothers. The mothers learn about nutrition, labor and birth, breastfeeding, early childhood development, CPR, and more to live healthier lives and provide better care for their families. Project Achievement: Project Achievement is UCFS' afterschool tutoring program. The program provides homework help and specialized reading assistance on a weekly basis throughout the school year. The second half of each Project Achievement session is a fun and engaging STEAM project as blending fun and learning is proven to maximize positive educational impact. Project Play On!: Project Play On! is UCFS' summer youth sports program. Children spend six weeks sampling various sports and engaging in free play. The program aims to increase physical activity and promote healthy habits early on for a long, healthy life. Cooking with CALC: UCFS' nutrition education program, Cooking with CALC, engages families with cooking lessons to teach healthy recipes, healthy substitutions to ingredients for traditional ethnic staple meals, tips on how to get the most out of your groceries by planning ahead and reading unit pricing, how to read a nutrition label, and so much more. This program assists clients in gradually adjusting their diet to incorporate more affordable and readily accessible foods in the U.S. to further integration and make small, sustainable changes to live a healthier lifestyle. Elderly Refugee Program: Funded by the Area Agency on Aging 1B and Michigan's Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, UCFS-CALC's Elderly Refugee Program provides social integration services to refugees ages 60 years and older. Additionally, the Elderly Refugee Program provides case management services to assist seniors with things such as benefits, healthcare navigation, citizenship, and more. THRIVE: UCFS-CALC's THRIVE program hosts events and outings to provide social and emotional support for people with cognitive, developmental, and physical disabilities and their families. The THRIVE program includes UCFS-CALC's Easter Party, World Refugee Day Picnic, Trunk or Treat, and Christmas Story Time events. Christmas Family Program: An “Adopt-A-Family” structured program where families enroll and donors provide items from the families’ wishlists. Families receive gifts at our Christmas Story Time event where they take pictures with Santa and hear a story from him and Mrs. Claus. Families then take the gifts home and open them in their family setting. Pathways to Prosperity Program – (PPP) assists clients with financial literacy, employment services, and healthy money habits. UCFS then matches the clients savings up to $3,000 per individual or $6,000 per household to invest in a home, a vehicle, a micro business, or education for themselves or their children. Employment Services: UCFS-CALC provides comprehensive employment services by not only supporting clients with resume preparation, job search, job placement, and recredentialing assistance. UCFS-CALC also supports clients by alleviating barriers to getting and keeping adequate employment such as childcare, auto repairs, basic needs assistance, housing stability assistance, and even supporting clients pursuing licenses and certifications. UCFS-CALC also provides career sampling and exploration opportunities. This allows our clients to get hands-on experience in a variety of fields to make informed decisions on the career that would be the best fit for them prior to investing time, money, and energy into pursuing a specific field. Afghan Women’s Services: UCFS-CALC provides Trusted Transportation to Afghan women refugees to transport them for employment, educational, and integration purposes. Social and emotional integration workshops are provided to support the target population in adjusting to their new community with emphasis on confidence, assertiveness, and self-advocacy. Additionally, hands-on career sampling and shadowing opportunities are provided to allow the target population to explore their interests and make informed decisions on which careers may be the best fit for themselves. “Unqualified Services”: UCFS aims to serve everyone who comes to us for help. We recognize that anyone willing to ask for assistance is in need of assistance. Families and individuals that do not qualify under grant funding agreements are provided with services such as translation, interpretation, Sustainable Steps Program services, etc. using our general operating funds.
