About This Cause

The Shelter Association is focused on ending homelessness rather than stabilizing it. Everything we do focuses on helping people move from homelessness into permanent housing as quickly as possible while addressing the ongoing needs of those we serve. We provide temporary shelter and supportive services in a safe and caring environment and work with the community to allocate the necessary resources to meet the needs of individual adults who are homeless. Mental illness is the third leading cause of homelessness and we have partnered with Community Mental Health (CMH) to address the critical needs of this very marginalized population. We provide wraparound services to help those with challenging mental health issues so that they can be housed sustainably. We focus on Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) for this population when needed and follow up with clients once they are housed through our Critical Time Intervention (CTI) program. The Shelter Association offers a variety of services and programs that address both the immediate and long-term needs of our clients in order that real, sustainable progress can be made. Services range from providing emergency shelter, referrals for substance use disorder treatment, clothing vouchers, transportation, and food to providing health care, housing assistance, and money management. These and other services are incorporated into the Shelter Association’s programs: Temporary shelter through our Residential program, Services through our Non-residential program and both night and day shelter support for the purpose of survival during our Winter Programs. In fact, we collaborate with local churches to provide both on-site and off-site night and day shelter services from November to April each year. Additionally, we offer innovative programs like our Recuperative Care (RCC) program to provide shelter and ongoing services for clients who are recovering medically. Generally, we receive referrals from local hospitals and others in the medical field. RCC is located off-site and is staffed by a case manager and a nurse who help transform lives through this critically needed program.
