About This Cause
Child & Family Services of Northwestern Michigan Foster Care Temporary out of home placement of children assigned by the Department of Health and Human Services, Community Mental Health, and by the courts placed in foster care homes. CFS recruits, licenses, and supports these homes with the ultimate goal of returning the children to their families. Adoption Children not able to return home are eligible for placement in permanent adoptive homes CFS Also has a private infant adoption program, which matches women experiencing unplanned pregnancy with families wishing to adopt. Trauma Assessment and counseling after traumatic events provided to children, primarily children in foster care. General Counseling Therapeutic modalities provided to children, families, and individuals. Wraparound For families with children diagnosed as severely emotionally disturbed (SED), Wraparound brings natural family supports together with a CFS facilitator to develop a family plan, which includes services that enable a child to remain in his or her own home or to return from a placement home. YouthWork Helps develop young people and their communities through service learning, mentoring, and job and life skills training, engaging our most disenfranchised youth and creating lasting impacts on them and our community spaces. Youth Work is moving their character and asset-building activities to a new home just west of Traverse City, hoping to purchase and renovate the perfect campus for hands-on learning and services Safe Haven Monitors, supports, and facilitates supervised visitation and safe exchanges for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Safe Haven North This program is being created to serve communities north of Traverse City with supervised visitation and safe child exchange starting in 2024 Youth Services Offers support, services, and shelter for youth and their families, particularly runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth. Licensing Recruits, trains, and supports foster and adoptive families as part of the professional team caring for children in out of home placement. FAST In partnership with Northern Lakes Community Mental Health (CMH), provides two-person crisis teams to respond to children’s crisis behavioral health situations 24/7. Community Ed & Training To perpetuate CFS’ role in the community as a teaching organization, this program was launched at the conclusion of the Third Level Crisis Hotline. The program provides community training in implicit Bias, Suicide Prevention, Trauma-Informed Community, Parenting Education, and other topics where CFS has the internal expertise. Family Time Coaching This program lays the groundwork for successful reunifications for children now in foster care, educating and supporting their natural parents as they build up their parenting skills. Independent Living Plus This program will utilize the former Pete’s Place space to house foster youth in need of coaching. Youth will spend 1-2 years building skills needed to be a successful adult. Host Homes An opportunity for foster youth to build the skills necessary to be successful adults in neighbors’ homes. Respite Homes Provide foster parents a breather when they need to attend to other things or just need a short break. Free Legal Aid clinic (FLAC) This partnership between CFS, Legal Services of Northern Michigan, and the Bar Association provides free legal consultations to income-eligible residents.
