About This Cause

NAMI Genesee is a local affiliate of the national organization NAMI. We have been in existence since 1983. All of our programs are offered free of cost to participants. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMS: SUPPORT: Peer and family support groups meet monthly offering mutual understanding and compassion. EDUCATION: NAMI programs are peer led, meaning the people leading these programs have similar life experiences to the people taking the programs. Participants learn not only from the materials, but also each other. Peer to Peer is an 8 week educational program for individuals living with a mental health condition. Individuals learn goal setting, becoming your own advocate, improve coping and problem solving skills, and learn about community resources. Family to Family is an 8 week educational program for family members of individuals with mental illness or severe emotional disturbances. During this course, participants learn to understand mental health conditions and prepare for crisis events. Various treatment options are discussed along with navigating the mental health system. Participants learn to various communication skills and new approaches to problem solving.
