Mission Statement
Seedlings Braille Books for Children is a 501(c)3 non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to increasing the opportunity for literacy by providing high-quality free and low-cost braille books for children.
About This Cause
Seedlings offers nearly 1,400 book titles in braille, from contemporary literature to well-loved classics and continues to add new titles each year so that visually impaired children have the opportunity to read the same books their sighted peers enjoy. Seedlings has an extensive collection of books for infants to teens. The catalog includes print-braille-picture books for pre-readers and beginning readers; print-and-braille books for beginning readers; and braille-only books for upper elementary and middle school children. Additionally, Seedlings' books are affordable. The average price of a Seedlings book is $10, even though the books cost much more to produce. Seedlings produces approximately 34,000 braille books and articles per year, 60% of which are given away with the goal to help increase the literacy rate among blind and visually impaired children. In addition to the production of books, in 1994 Seedlings added The Rose Project which provides free transcription of encyclopedia articles in braille for students' projects and reports. Seedlings also offers the Book Angel Program. Each year Seedlings provides three free braille books to visually impaired children from the United States who register. Another program sponsored by Seedlings and made available in select states is the Adopt-A-Reader program. In the Adopt-A-Reader program a donor "adopts" a visually impaired child who has signed up for the program. The donor gives Seedlings $100 and Seedlings in turn gives the "adopted" reader a $100 gift certificate to select books from Seedlings' catalog,
