Mission Statement
Our mission is to help girls and young women experiencing homelessness and other risks avoid violence, early pregnancy, and exploitation; and help them to explore and access the support, resources, and opportunities necessary to be safe, to grow strong, and to make positive choices for their lives.
About This Cause
AFG Prevention AFG’s Prevention Program serves girls ages 10-19 who are at risk of pregnancy, gang involvement, abusing drugs or alcohol and school truancy. AFG’s Prevention Program engages them through after-school programs, a teen leadership program, and a summer camp. Prevention’s latest program, Strengthening Families, works with entire families to improve communication or health and nutrition in the home. AFG Shelter AFG’s Shelter Program provides a stable home, counseling, and life skills training to homeless young women aged 15-21 and their children. The goal is to empower them to lead productive and fulfilling lives. AFG’s Shelter can house up to 24 young women and their children (ages 0-6). In addition to providing homeless young women with a safe and stable place to stay, AFG also provides life skills classes, counseling and case planning services to those we serve—all with the goal of giving them the tools they need to lead fulfilling and independent lives. AFG Outreach and Education Services (OES) AFG’s Outreach Program helps teens and women engaged in high-risk activities, such as sex trafficking, domestic violence, drug use, and gang involvement, understand the risks of such activities, and transition to safe choices and healthy lives. AFG Outreach serves as a lifeline to many young and adult women seeking to remove themselves from situations and activities that threaten their well-being, futures, and lives. Staff and volunteers encounter girls and women on the streets, in all seasons, during daylight and after dark, and provide them with harm-reduction kits, referrals, and direct services — all links to life-saving and support services. Street outreach efforts offer safe alternatives and compassion for those involved in sex work or are victims of human trafficking, creating hope that tomorrow will be better. Peer Education is a youth leadership program that trains at-risk youth to reach out to other at-risk youth in the community. The teams focus on healthy relationships, HIV, homelessness, internet bullying, and positive life choices. AFG Crisis Resource Center AFG’s Crisis Resource Center connects families and individuals with needed services, both those that AFG can provide along with referrals to other organizations. The Crisis Resource Center provides services for walk-in clients Monday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Any member of the community in crisis may walk in to discuss their needs in private. A qualified team of staff and volunteers will determine whether a walk-in person is eligible for AFG services and/or make referrals to other organizations based on that person’s needs. AFG also manages a crisis line. People in crisis may call (888) AFG-3919, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Crisis Line staff will put callers in touch with appropriate area service providers including shelter accommodations and child care assistance.
