Mission Statement

The mission of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum Collect, conserve, preserve and display the history of the Tuskegee Airmen and make it available to the people of the United States and world at large. Promote community wellbeing with the history of the Tuskegee Airmen in their struggle to fight for the USA during WWII. Conduct youth programs that Inspire, mentor and promote excellence in the pursuit of careers in aviation and aerospace science. Conduct programs that teach aviation and aerospace science skills and develops in the individual the skills to contribute to meaningful careers and the wellbeing of the community

About This Cause

Youth Programs Provided by The Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum The Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum is committed to inspiring youth to achieve excellence and motivates youth towards careers in aviation and aerospace science with the following programs in Metro Detroit. As more resources become available the programs will be expanded to include more youth and more cities in Michigan and other states. The programs of the Museum are designed for all youth but primarily youth that are disadvantaged financially and/or underrepresented in the fields of aviation and aerospace science. Aviation Career Education Academy This Program is designed for Youth in grades 8 - 11 who may or may not have an interest in an aviation career. The 5-day camp is based at Wayne State University. Tours include Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Metro Airport and The Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum. Classroom instruction includes the History of Aviation, parts of an airplane, theory of flight, weather, and aviation map reading. Activities include: 1. Airplane rides where the student flies the airplane with a licensed pilot. 2. Model airplane building and flying contest. 3. Computer flight simulator missions. 4. Picnics 5. Model rocketry demonstration Tuskegee Airmen Flight Academy Start your flying Career Tuskegee Airmen Flight Academy is designed for youth ages 14 to 19 years of age who want to become pilots. The program offers year round flight instruction and ground school classes leading to a private pilot license. The cost of the program to the youth is minimal mostly books and FAA exam fees. Two scholarships are available each year to youth to receive flight instruction for a private pilots license. The program is designed for disadvantaged youth, male and female in the Metro Area. Wild Blue Wonders Program The Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum offers the Wild Blue Wonders (WBW) Program in the Detroit Metro Area. This program uses aviation to inspire middle school age students to learn more about science, math and technology. Using a team approach, the program utilizes five prepared components or “missions”, each designed to implement a “Flight Crew’s” various problem-solving skills. Each mission is developed around specific educational standards. The WBW program has been designed by leaders in aviation education to be flexible and easily implemented in the classroom or as an after-school activity. For more info call 313-843-8849. Carver STEM Academy at DTW TRACON Carver STEM Academy at Detroit City Airport Young Eagles The Detroit Tuskegee Airmen EAA Chapter 1351 holds Young Eagles Rallies on the second Sunday of the month from April to September in an effort to attract youth to our other aviation programs. The rallies run from 10AM to 2PM and gives youth ages 8 to 17 a free airplane ride around the city of Detroit. For more info call 313-843-8849 or visit www.youngeagles.org Tuskegee Airmen National Museum Rocket Club The Tuskegee Airmen National Museum Rocket Club seeks to involve youth that have an interest in aerospace science and do not want to fly airplanes. The rocket club meets the 3rd, 4th and 5th Thursday of the month from 6 to 8PM and is for youth ages 10 to 19+. The club does involve college students and adults that have an interest in highpower rocketry. The club sponsors teams of youth to the Team America Rocketry Challenge which is a competition to launch an egg to a specified height and return it to earth undamaged. The club is in its inaugural year and has Level 2 Certified rocketeers. For more info call Brian R. Smith @ 313-843-8849. Tuskegee Airmen National Museum’s Airshow The Museum performs an airshow for the City of Detroit during the River Days Festival every year. Historic aircraft as well as acrobatic perform in the 1.5 hour long airshow over the 3-day weekend. A & P Maintenance Familiarization Program This is a new program provided by The World Heritage Air Museum and the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum. The program seeks to introduce youth and young adults to the career field of aviation maintenance with hands on as well as class room instruction. Graduates from this program will be able to move on to a certified maintenance program to complete the A & P license curriculum. The program will meet on Thursdays at 6:00PM at Detroit City Airport in BAY 13. For more information call Brian Smith PhD. at 313-843-8849 The Museum is also raising money to build a new building to house the exhibts, artifacts and airplanes at Detroit City Airport. The Museum is raising money to recover Frank Moody's P-39 Airacobra in which he perished during training. The aircraft is being pulled from Lake Huron . In addition the Museum is raising funds to purchase a flying P-51 Mustang to help take the history of the Tuskegee Airmen to the world.
