Mission Statement

Established in 1970, the mission of the Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) Center, Inc, a Federally Qualified Health Center, is to develop, promote and provide comprehensive, accessible and affordable quality primary health care and support services to all residents of the community, with special emphasis on the underserved African American and Latino populations.

About This Cause

To accomplish our mission CHASS provides a wide range of services including preventive and primary health care for persons of all ages, oral and behavioral health care, chronic disease self-management education and support, and intimate partner violence education and intervention. We strive to educate and empower our patients to be the healthiest version of themselves possible. CHASS’ service area includes 14 zip codes encompassing southwest Detroit and near downriver communities. In 2019, CHASS provided care to 11,376 unduplicated users. Eighty-one percent of patients are Latino, 10% are African American, 5% are Caucasian/White and 4% are a mix of American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander or Other. Sixty-eight percent are best served in a language other than English. CHASS patients are economically vulnerable. Eighty-six percent of patients have incomes at or below 100% of poverty. An additional 8% have incomes that fall between 101% and 150% of poverty. Only 49% of patients have health care coverage – Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance. The balance, 51%, are uninsured. For the uninsured, CHASS provides care based on a sliding fee scale to ensure affordability.
