Mission Statement

Metro Detroit Youth Day, a program of Michigan Youth Appreciation Foundation was formed to inspire our youth to do the most good through positive, educational and physical activities.

About This Cause

Metro Detroit Youth Day was formed in 1980 following altercations in Detroit between youth and store owners. The youth were running in the stores and stealing liquor and wine with the owners chasing them out on to the street. In a two week period 2 youth and 1 store owner was shot and killed. In cooperation with civic and youth organizations (25) the first Metro Detroit Youth Day was held in July of 1981 on the athletic field of Belle Isle. That year, about 1,100 kids and 100 volunteers showed up. In 2017, 37,000 kids and 1,700 volunteers participated in sports clinics (basketball put on by the Detroit Pistons, football put on by the Detroit Lions and NFL Alumni Assn., baseball put on by the Detroit Tigers, tennis by the US Tennis Assn., golf,), games, contests, relay races, entertainment, "College Row" with 14 colleges and universities setting up tents to talk to the kids and show them what opportunities are available. In addition the participants are treated to a free lunch in the middle of the day. College scholarships are also awarded to area high school graduating seniors (1,200 to date). Our goal is to inspire our youth to do the most good, stay in school, go to college and become our future leaders.
