Mission Statement

Aravind Eye Foundation, formerly Friends of Aravind, was established in 2000 to help Aravind Eye Care System in its mission to eliminate needless blindness and spread its sustainable model of highly efficient and effective eye care to India’s rural populations and other developing countries.

About This Cause

In 1976, Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy established Aravind Eye Hospital with a fierce commitment to eliminating needless blindness. From its humble beginnings as an 11-bed eye hospital in Madurai, Aravind Eye Care System has become the largest, most productive provider of services and trainer of eye care personnel in the world. Aravind has handled over 60 million outpatient visits and performed over 6 million surgical and laser procedures, the vast majority for patients who are too poor to pay.
