Mission Statement

HOPE provides safe and judgment free shelter, innovative programs, and public advocacy to end homelessness.

About This Cause

HOPE provides low barrier emergency shelter for adults as well as recuperative shelter for those who are homeless, newly discharged from a hospital inpatient setting who need a 24/7 safe place to recover. Both shelters feature a plethora of services through our collaborative partners to help an individual build a network of support as well as move from homelessness to homes. HOPE's navigators connect shelter guests with vital documents, and arrange for onsite services such as medical, mental health, housing and employment through community partners. During the pandemic, HOPE also provides shelter at a motel site for those who are COVID positive, COVID exposed/needing to quarantine and for essential workers who work in risky situations whose presence would pose a risk of infection to the general shelter population. Vision HOPE envisions a community where all have the opportunity to move from homelessness to safe housing, gain access to resources, and develop the skills to enhance their quality of life. Our Core Values • Treat all with dignity and respect • Create a safe and nurturing environment • Belief in the potential of all individuals • Provide support and opportunity • Practice fiscal responsibility • Produce positive change through collaboration, competence and creativity HOPE Organization Information Hospitality and Warming Center, Inc. was founded in 1998 as a community response to the hypothermic death of a homeless person in downtown Pontiac, Michigan. Since this time, the center has provided seasonal emergency shelter for individuals struggling with homelessness. This is a walk in, self referral, emergency shelter and is the only one in Oakland County. It is located at 249 Baldwin Avenue in Pontiac. HOPE Adult Shelter is a low barrier shelter which means that we do not require sobriety, adherence to a program or religious affiliation to participate. We do require that guests follow basic rules of respect, safety and staff directives. Low barrier also means that we work to remove barriers such as lack of access to transportation by bringing resources through community partners directly into the shelter. Shelter resources include access screenings through Common Ground for Oakland County Community Mental Health services, CMH intakes onsite through Easter Seals and CNS, private areas to meet with case managers, a volunteer nurse run onsite triage health clinic, Oakland Primary clinic onsite twice a week as well as public health nurses who work to connect guests with health resources, onsite access to housing programs from three separate agencies and connection onsite to Michigan Works programs. HOPE also provides peer led AA/NA meetings, a guest advisory council, self esteem groups, literacy tutoring, yoga as well as the services of a navigator to assist guests with making critical connections that are pathways out of homelessness, securing essential documentation (e.g. state ID, birth certificates, social security cards, as well as assistance with SSI/SSDI applications. The HOPE Recuperative Center pilot added 10 more beds to the agency’s capacity. It is expected that the HOPE Recuperative Center will ultimately be a 25 bed unit. The Recuperative Center is located at 175 Branch in Pontiac. Referrals to the recuperative services are solely through partner hospitals and the shelter serves people discharged from the hospital who need a safe, medically supervised place to recover from illness, injury or surgery.
