About This Cause

PRAIRIE VIEW A & M CASE FOR SUPPORT Imagine the pride a parent or loved one feels when their teenage son or daughter announces PV has accepted them. Now, try to feel the excitement these same young men and women experience when they begin to understand the possibilities and opportunities their Prairie View degree will afford them. Because of their unique ability to attract a diversified student base, HBCU’s play an increasingly important role in education as the work world becomes more global. Since its creation, Prairie View has stood fast on it mission, offering a well educated and well prepared pool of graduates to employers. YESTERDAY From its start in the decade after the Civil War to the present, our university has emphasized forming a solid educational base, upon which graduates can build their lives or further their education. Prairie View has always provided a “total education” - leadership development, civic engagement, social opportunities, and exposure to the arts and culture. That focus cannot be forsaken. Prairie View A & M University has provided the hopes and nurtured the dreams in the lives of thousands of men and women since 1876. Our graduates pass the torch to their children, nieces and nephews as we continue to enroll freshmen whose family members also attended PVAMU. When the State of Texas created a new constitution that, even today, continues as the basic organic law of Texas, it stated, “the Legislature shall also, when deemed practicable, establish and provide for the maintenance of a college or branch university for the instruction of coloured youths of the State ….,” the excitement these first students and their families felt must have been indescribable. That excitement must continue and be available for our students of today and tomorrow. TODAY Prairie View has made astonishing strides in continuing to provide quality education, supplying its diverse graduates with prospects and options graduating business leaders, teachers, nurses, engineers, architects, military leaders, professional athletes, civically engaged citizens, as well as preparing those who choose to pursue an advanced degrees is the hallmark of our University. Many of our graduates have gone on to attend top medical, law, and graduate programs. Quality education provided by the University continues to create possibilities that might otherwise not have existed. With our continued emphasis on the "basics" our graduates have succeeded - opening doors that they may never have realized were available. As we move forward, we will always draw inspiration from and highlight our legacy. Prairie View continues to reach out and to attract students that represent the diversity of our State, the nation and the world. Additionally, Prairie View A&M University has a unique history with the military. Throughout its 135 year existence it has produced more flag rank military officers than any other historically black university. The University continues to educate students through ROTC programs in both the Army and Navy. This is punctuated by the fact that Prairie View was the first black university to host an Army and Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Program. Excellence goes beyond the classroom. The Panther football team was the Southwestern Athletic Conference champions in 2009, men’s tennis team winning the SWAC title for 2010, 2013 and our women’s basketball program was crowned champions in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014. To participate in an athletic program that consistently produces competitive teams at a high level is an opportunity every young athlete dreams of. PV offers that opportunity and athletes also are given a great education. In competitive academics, our Quiz Bowl team gained national recognition by winning the 2010 Honda Campus All Star Challenge. Eight colleges and the School of Architecture boast more than 50 degree programs in engineering, sciences, architecture, business, technology, criminal justice, humanities, education nursing and social sciences. We also feature post-graduate programs including four doctoral degrees. TOMORROW As state legislatures throughout the country cut back support for higher education, public colleges and universities across the nation are turning to their alumni and friends as never before — engaging graduates and mobilizing student phone banks to raise private money in amounts they once thought impossible. Prairie View A & M University has existed as a state-assisted institution and a proud member of The Texas A & M University System. This network of support has made possible the achievements to date. However, additional philanthropic investment is needed. In order to maintain Prairie View’s heritage and to continue to afford its students the possibilities and opportunities that began 138 years ago, your University needs your help. Virtually every area within our great university’s realm needs financial support to maintain its “University of first class standing” and your University needs your support today.
