About This Cause
Casa del Lago (which means “the lake house” in Spanish) was born out of the vision of leaders at Cristo Rey Presbyterian Church. From its beginning in 2002, this church has been actively seeking to serve the needs of the Hispanic community in the Webb Chapel Road corridor in northwest Dallas. English as a second language classes started being offered in 2006, and a Summer Youth Corps program was begun in 2011. These programs positively impacted the lives of many people, but Pastor Josh Geiger and the leaders at Cristo Rey recognized that much more was needed. These leaders also recognized that the church’s own human and financial resources, which were quite limited, would not be enough to carry out their robust vision for serving the community. Several years of investigation, discussion, and prayer brought these leaders to the conclusion that they needed to start another nonprofit organization to carry out this vision. A working group was formed and in the fall of 2014 “Casa del Lago” (legally known as “Esperanza Ministries”) was incorporated as a 501c3 organization. In its first year, Casa del Lago took over the English as a Second Language classes from Cristo Rey. Casa immediately began building on that foundation by adding a structured curriculum and educational focus to the babysitting that had always been provided for preschool children. Now in its seventh year, this Early Childhood Education program has served 36-44 children each year, equipping the children and their parents with the skills needed to be ready for Kindergarten. Evening ESL classes were added in Casa’s second year, along with “Kids Club” to provide homework help, educational enrichment, and games for the children of evening ESL students. In Casa’s third year the Summer Youth Corps was restructured into its current format in which 15-20 middle and high school age youth are trained to run 5 weeks of Summer Reading Camp for elementary school children in the community. In the fall of 2018 “Casa Afterschool” was launched by taking the reading intervention and enrichment strategies which were so successful in Summer Reading Camps and incorporating those into a two day a week after school format for 1st-3rd graders. In addition to the core programs described above, Casa has also at different times provided counseling, financial literacy classes, citizenship classes, legal assistance, women’s microenterprise development and other services. Always key to Casa’s success has been a passionate, committed board and a staff with a deep love for Christ and the people of Bachman Lake Community. In March of 2018 Casa welcomed Josh Geiger back to the organization as its first Executive Director. The board and staff look forward to continuing Casa’s tradition of quality, family-focused service to the Bachman Lake Community
