Mission Statement
Our purpose is to help develop these young athletes' skills to allow them to progress as a team to into the next class of tournaments. Throughout the year during training and competition these girls also learn valuable life skills that will help them become leaders and role models as they become adults. These athletes develop skills in self-control, teamwork, determination, communication, dedication, leadership as well as many other valuable lessons that become lifelong skills. The Strikezone Fillies Organization was organized exclusively for public, charitable, and/or educational purposes within the scope of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
About This Cause
The Strikezone Fillies is a competitive youth club travel softball organization for girls located out of Enon, Ohio. The teams primarily practice in the neighboring towns of Springfield and Dayton. In Springfield both teams practice at Frank Myer Fields when the weather is nice outside. The 14U team has girls from all over Ohio on the team and during the winter they practice inside at Action Sporty in Dayton. The 12U team is more local and a developmental team that has potential and they practice at the Batcave and Homeplate indoor facilities in Springfield. We are an organization that currently has two teams but is looking to grow the number of teams each year. The organization currently has two teams, a 14U and a 12U team. The teams are on a year-round commitment that runs from August until July. The 14U team is super competitive and they are playing in several high-level tournaments throughout multiple states. Some of these girls have played together for multiple years under other organizations. They have been the champion and runner up in several tournaments already. Both teams practice on average 3 times per week with mist girls then see private instructors for various things at least twice a week. Most girls in travel ball have a private hitting and fielding coach in addition to a catching or pitching coach for those positions. Multiple of our coaches played softball or baseball at the college level and two played four years of diamond sports at a D1 school. During the winter months we are able to spend a lot of time developing the girls and focusing on the areas that need improvement. Weekly the coaches have a meeting to put together detailed practice plans to ensure that all practices are run and organized with a purpose. These plans are broken into sections of focus with detailed drills and the amount of time we will spend on each area. Without a focused plan the bus gets away from the driver very quickly and becomes a waste of our time and the girls without structure. The 14U team is playing tournaments in Tennessee, Indiana and Ohio this year. They will play in roughly 15-20 tournaments (average cost of $800-$1200/tournament) this year ending in a World Series at Berliner in Columbus, Ohio in July. They will spend a week in TN over Father’s Day playing in a tournament. This team often plays in PGFs which are premier tournaments and cost more than most. Due to the level of play they have yearly fees per girl of $1500 plus some fundraisers for the team. The 12U team has yearly dues of $800 as well as a few team fundraising opportunities. The team fundraising opportunities are provided for each family to use to lower the yearly player fee. Last year multiple families were able to reduce the overall cost by more than 50% by these two fundraisers alone. We have our annual Signing Day Raffle and a Gift Card Basket Raffle in December both of these fundraisers go 100% directly to player fee reduction. The 12U team played in 3 Fall tournaments and will play in 8-10 summer tournaments (average cost of each tournament is $450-$500) and possibly a local weekly league. This team will mainly travel locally within an hour of our home field with the exception of one tournament in Blacklick in the summer that will require an overnight stay. One of our top priorities is to provide a comprehensive program at an affordable price to allow as many girls as possible the opportunity to further develop and grow athletically while supporting and giving back to the community that supports them. In an average week the organization spends about 10-15% of our time on planning and organization and 75-85% of our time on practices, scrimmages and games. We spend roughly 80-85% of our resources directly on softball and the remaining on administrative and team building. Some of the fundraisers that we participate in: We work at the local Pee Wee football games in the concessions. The parents and the girls volunteer their time. The 14U team also hosted a small round robin tournament at a local park. The 12U girls volunteered to help park cars and organize the event. We also had a couple different sporting event tickets donated to the team and we raffled them off by selling tickets. The girls also offered to help elderly around their house as community service and always help the local rec league on clean up day to give back. We are always looking for other ways to give back to our community. All coaches, directors and board members are 100% volunteers and pass a background check and go through youth athletic training. Coaches are encouraged to participate in continuing education and coaching clinics to increase their knowledge and improve players' skill. We also encourage the coaches to offer at least 1 open practice weekly and allow any youth athlete under 18 from the community to come out and join the practice. This allows us to increase the skills of youth in the community as well as allow them to learn about our organization. We have also had youth from the community join our girls for strength training sessions and for hitting leagues to get extra reps. Furthering the Nonprofit’s Exempt Purposes Strikezone Fillies is organized exclusively for public, charitable, and/or educational purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. All of the above things help us further our exempt purposes by providing experienced instruction to the youth of our community and allowing them to compete on a competitive level at softball tournaments in a multi-state area
