About This Cause
Barry County United Way provides programs and services that work to address issues in our community in the areas of Income, Health and Education. We not only partner with local organizations by providing funding and support, we also provide direct service to our residents. Agencies are funded in the four categories - Helping youth reach their full potential (Barry County 4-H, Barry County Substance Abuse and Mental Health, Leadership Youthquest, Scouting, Thornapple Parks and Recreation and the YMCA of Barry County), , Assisting seniors find and maintain independence (Commission on Aging Meals on Wheels & In Home Services), Supporting families to achieve well being and success (CASA, Family Support Center, Habitat for Humanity, Safe Harbor, 211) and Addressing Urgent and Emerging needs (Green Gables Haven Domestic Violence Shelter and Barry County Family Promise). In addition, Barry County United Way offers many direct services. Information and referrals are available 24/7 for health and human services needs through 211. Backpack Program — provides school supplies and backpacks for K-12 school children prior to school starting for families at or below 200% of the poverty. Car Seat Education – education & installation for parents provided by NTSB certified instructors. Dental Clinic Intake -- providing information and paperwork needed to access the Barry County Free Dental Clinic. Family Economic Support office (FESO) - assisting families to achieve financial independence. Volunteer mentors are matched with those needing assistance in money management and budgeting. Fresh Food Initiative- (see back cover) free food is available to families needing assistance Homeless Prevention and Emergency Assistance funding to prevent homelessness—must provide foreclosure or eviction notice, shut off notice and DHHS referral. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Program Free smoke and CO detectors are installed by trained firefighters from your community. Toys for Barry County Kids– Providing assistance with Christmas gifts for families at or below 200% of poverty. Utility Assistance– MEAP grant assistance available to families in need based on 150% of poverty. Veterans Affairs– Coordination of community resources and programs to provide assistance with food, utilities, housing and medical benefits for veterans and their families. VITA— Free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance for households with income less than $60,000. Volunteer Center – matches and recruits volunteers with opportunities to give back in our community VSP Vouchers — Providing assistance for eye glasses. Eligibility based on 200% of poverty level.
